Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County – Annual Wing Eating Contest

Area residents are invited to attend a free, friendly competition between police officers and firefighters from Bristol County. The contest will be held on Thursday, March 31, 6pm at Whites of Westport.

This year, with an expanded field of competitors and a live radio broadcast with Michael Rock of FUN 107, the CAC aims to bring friends, family and partner agencies together to kick off April as Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Prevention Month. The four-year standing rival between the Fall River and New Bedford departments will now be joined by other teams hoping to bring the winning trophy to their departments. “We are creating a Thanksgiving-football-game-day type of competition among various departments within Bristol County,” said Michelle Loranger, Bristol County CAC Executive Director. Police Departments competing include: Swansea vs. Seekonk, Dartmouth vs. Somerset, Taunton vs. Attleboro, Fall River vs. New Bedford, Fairhaven vs. Mansfield Police, Acushnet vs. Westport in addition to the five-year competition of Fall River against New Bedford (to include both their fire and police departments.)

“April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, but all year long, we wouldn’t be able to do our work without the professionalism and expertise of our friends in the police and fire departments throughout the county,” Loranger said. “We’re grateful for this event as a way to highlight our mission and philosophy that there is no excuse for child abuse, honor our valuable partnerships, and have fun, all for an important cause.”

National statistics tell us that one in four girls and one in six boys will be the victim of sexual abuse by the time they reach 18. Ninety percent of children are sexually abused by someone they know, love and trust. And national statistics show that 60 percent of parents/caretakers of child victims have been victims themselves. Our Bristol County statistics show comparable data in all these areas. And yet we know that not all cases come to the CAC and that childhood sexual abuse is under-reported.

The CAC of Bristol County is a not-for-profit agency that provides comprehensive forensic, health and medical, and support services to children who have been victims of sexual abuse and violence. The agency will provide many outreach activities in various schools and child serving agencies throughout the county during the month of April. Recently, the agency surpassed serving its 3,200 case since their inception in July 2007. The agency also serves as an information clearing house for families and professionals in all corners of the county, from Fairhaven to Easton. The agency is located at 58 Arch Street in Fall River.

The CAC works closely with a number of area agencies, including law enforcement, Department of Children & Families and the District Attorney’s office, in providing direct services to children and families who have experienced sexual abuse and/or severe physical abuse, or who have been witnesses to violence.

Wake and Funeral for Deputy Sheriff John Robert Kotfila Jr.

The Falmouth Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police announce the following information regarding services for Deputy Sheriff John Robert Kotfila Jr. of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Deputy Sheriff Kotfila, while on duty, was involved in a head–on collision with a wrong-way driver near Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, March 12. The woman who called 911 to report the accident told the media that she believed Deputy Sheriff Kotfila sacrificed himself to save her.

Deputy Sheriff Kotfila, was a six-year member of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Kotfila came from a family of law enforcement officers. His father, John Kotfila Sr., is a Massachusetts State Police Sergeant and was a former Falmouth Police Officer. One of Deputy Kotfila’s brothers, Michael, is an officer of the Falmouth Police Department, and his maternal grandfather, Robert Cahoon is a retired Massachusetts State Police Staff Sergeant who once served as commander of the Bourne Barracks.

The wake will be held at the Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Falmouth on Tuesday, March 22, from 4-8 p.m. A law enforcement Walk-By will begin at 5 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 511 Main St., Falmouth, on Wednesday, March 23, at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at St Joseph’s Cemetery on Gifford Street in Falmouth.

Media Logistics:

• For both the wake on Tuesday and the funeral on Wednesday, media vehicles should park on Lantern Lane, which runs adjacent to 556 Main St., Falmouth. Media members may then walk down Main Street a short distance to 502 Main St., where they can set up in front of the Colonial Filling Station, which is across the street from St. Patrick’s Church. Police media relations personnel will be present at that location. Also, we will bring dignitaries and other law enforcement personnel who are interested in speaking to media at that location for interviews.

• One print and one broadcast pool camera will be allowed into the church for the funeral from a stationary position. Please contact David Procopio at State Police Media Relations at david.procopio@massmail.state.ma.us prior to Wednesday to advise which outlets will have the pool assignments. We will work with the Church to arrange a stationary position.

• Media covering the burial may park at Goodwill Park, located on Goodwill Park Road, just north of the cemetery, and walk across Gifford Street to the cemetery. Police personnel will arrange a stationary position in the cemetery from which media may view the graveside portion of the services.

• We also ask that news helicopters flying over the cemetery please hold off-set, downwind positions, at altitudes of at least 2,000 feet, if possible to minimize noise disruption over the graveside site. The State Police Air Wing will also be over the site and may ask media helicopters to move off their positions if necessary. We will make every effort to accommodate.

New Bedford Ready to Host 39th Annual Half Marathon

The course is a challenging one that includes two major hills, waterfront views, and will be lined with hundreds of volunteers and cheering fans.

More than 120 New Bedford police officers will patrol the course and ambulances staffed by New Bedford Emergency Medical Services will be stationed throughout the city. The New Bedford Police Department has asked runners and spectators not to bring bags to the course as backpacks, suitcases and rolling bags will not be permitted near the start/finish area. The New Bedford Police Department is also asking spectators and runners alike to report any suspicious activity to one of the many police officers available throughout the course leading up to, during, and after the race.

Parking on the race course will not be permitted and “no parking” signs will be posted along the route to warn motorists. In addition, the race course is closed to vehicular traffic and residents are advised to plan ahead as traffic will be restricted from approximately 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. New Bedford Police encourage residents who live in the south end of the city, especially those who live on the peninsula, to plan to leave before 10:30 a.m. and return after 1:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to avoid Route 18 southbound from Union Street south while the race is underway.

The New Bedford Police Department has identified two alternative routes for persons wishing to gain access inside the course perimeter. Persons who may be visiting a patient at St. Luke’s Hospital or who need access to the inner perimeter for other reasons should consider the following routes:

1. Rt. 195 East bound to Penniman Street exit to County to Parker to Cottage St.
2. Rt. 195 Westbound to Downtown Exit to Rt. 18

Owls of the World.” Wilson introduces the audience to owls found in New England and as well other parts of the world. A slide show begins the program by showcasing colorful wildlife photos by her husband Mark Wilson. Marcia imitates the owls’ calls herself, paying special attention to the more common owls that we might encounter in our area. After a hooting lesson and much audience anticipation, Marcia brings out the live owls one at a time.

With each owl perched securely on her gloved hand, she walks out among the audience with six or seven owls. There’s plenty of time for close-up views, photos and questions. Each owl presented has a permanent disability which prevents him or her from surviving on their own in the wild. These non-releasable owls serve as captivating ambassadors from the world of wildlife.
