About St.Anne’s Credit Union:
Founded in 1936 and headquartered in Fall River, MA, St. Anne’s Credit Union has been providing financial products and services to SouthCoast communities for over 80 years.

St. Anne’s Credit Union was established in the midst of a depression, by a young man named William J. Cyr who saw the possibilities – people helping each other regain their financial health. With the assistance of a group of friends, Cyr began collecting 25 cents from several people after church each Sunday to accumulate enough funds to qualify for a federal charter. With assets totaling $1016, St. Anne’s became a fully sanctioned federal credit union in 1936. Realizing the positive impact this had on the community, Cyr went on to found 36 more credit unions throughout New England.

St. Anne’s Credit Union maintains Cyr’s original commitment to members and to the community to this very day – people have looked to St. Anne’s Credit Union as a sound, safe place for the best in banking products. Also a leader in mortgage lending and consumer lending, more and more people turn to St. Anne’s to secure loans for used cars, trucks and vans, higher education, mortgages, home improvements and more.

With over $900 million in assets and more than 55,000 members, St. Anne’s Credit Union has more than 150 employees servicing eight branches including Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, New Bedford, Somerset, and Swansea. St. Anne’s Credit Union has also been recognized by Banker and Tradesman as the #1 Credit Union in Massachusetts in addition to being named one of the leading lenders in Bristol County. ALMA DEL MAR FINALIZES ENROLLMENT PLAN
Sixth Grade will serve as permanent second entry point at new campus

NEW BEDFORD – Nearly 100 new sixth grade scholars, along with 100 new kindergarten-aged children, will join the Alma del Mar community in August 2020. The two grades will serve as the primary entry points for New Bedford children joining the charter public school as it continues to grow its enrollment.

Alma was awarded an additional 594 seats for a second campus in New Bedford in January 2019. This second campus opened in August 2019 to 200 children in K-2 and sixth grade. This was the first year sixth grade was an entry point for new scholars, as kindergarten has previously served as the primary entry point since the school opened in 2011.

Alma prides itself in providing a rigorous yet highly supportive education to every scholar who walks through its doors. Alma middle schoolers are the highest performing middle schoolers on state MCAS tests in the city.

“We heard from a lot of families last spring who were looking for additional middle school options for their children,” said Will Gardner, Executive Director at Alma. “We are happy to be able to offer our middle school program to a greater number of families as we grow our enrollment. In just a few years, we will be graduating nearly 150 well-prepared eighth graders every spring.”

At full enrollment, the Douglass Campus will serve 50 children per grade in grades K-5, and 98 children per grade in grades 6-8. Alma’s Ottiwell campus will continue to serve 450 scholars in grades K-8, with 50 scholars in each grade.

The Douglass Campus’ larger sixth grade cohort will be selected as part of the school’s enrollment lottery on Feb. 26. Applications for New Bedford children entering grades Kindergarten through Eighth grade are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, and may be completed online at Alma’s website, www.almadelmar.org.

Strange and Unusual Christmas Traditions to Ponder this Holiday Season

On the eve of Christmas, in the midst of holiday madness and last minute shopping, why not pause and reflect on some truly wonderful traditions from around the world? Think about what your family and friends do every year; maybe its watching a Charlie Brown Christmas special, hanging stockings, an ugly sweater party; whatever brings you joy. Here are some fascinating (and I dare say) endearing traditions from around all over the globe.

Pictured above is the “Yule Cat” of Iceland, a huge and vicious cat who lurks about the snowy countryside during Christmas time (Yule) and eats people who have not received any new clothes to wear before Christmas Eve. Thus, its tradition for everyone to give and get a new outfit at Christmas, which is also very practical!

In Germany it’s been a tradition since the 16th century to hide a pickle in the tree, and the lucky child who finds it gets a gift! Today you’ll find pickle ornaments instead of an actual dill pickle, but the spirit is still there. I can get behind this!

If you’re visiting Austria in December brace yourself for horrifying masks depicting Krampus, the evil accomplice of St. Nick! There is even an annual Krampus parade in Vienna every year.

Are you afraid of spiders? You should probably avoid the Ukraine at Christmas time then! An old folk tale speaks of a widow, who could not afford a tree and the spiders in her house took pity on her and her children and spun an amazing display for the family. Check out this fantastic tree:

Here’s a tradition I can get behind: KFC on Christmas! My own family has a long-standing practice of having Kentucky Fried Chicken on New Years Day; everyone contributes to a pot luck and for some reason my family has long been tasked with bringing The Colonel along for the ride! Requests go out a week in advance for extra biscuits, Mac N Cheese and especially potato wedges. In Japan KFC famously co-opted the Christmas holiday back in the early 1970’s with an aggressive campaign that pushed the message “Kentucky for Christmas!” and it stuck. To this day, KFC does HUGE business on Christmas with many families carrying on the tradition.

So what are some of YOUR Christmas traditions? Share them in the comments, maybe you’ll start a whole new fad! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Joyous Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah and Happy Festivus for the rest of us!
