The Blue Point Restaurant Starts a New Chapter in Acushnet

If you’re a fan of the the Blue Point Restaurant on social media you may have noticed that their has been a flurry of activity recently. If you’re a regular, you might have seen a couple of new faces at the bar or working in the kitchen. One of those individuals is Juan Gomez who is actually returning to his roots as the new chef/ co-owner of the Blue Point. Years ago, Juan got his start working in the kitchen along side longtime owner David Riccardi. After venturing off to chart his own path and culinary career, he’s returning to a place that kickstarted his journey. For the past few years Juan has been the head chef at Knuckleheads, but when an opportunity presents itself you have to take a leap of faith. The other half of this dynamic team is Natasha Silva, who brings extensive restaurant experience of her own as a bartender and front of the house manager. Its her presence that you see on social media and her drive to reach and engage new fans of the amazing food that Juan will be creating.

The Blue Point is a unique opportunity, its both a hidden gem and a local favorite. Based on past interactions and a feature we did on Knuckleheads a few years back, we know the quality of the food that Juan puts out there. In speaking with David he’s excited at the chance to remain on board in the kitchen while simultaneously passing the torch to a new generation that reveres the place and the customers as much as he does. One big change; David finally gets to enjoy a Sunday off for the first time in 30 odd years.

One thing that won’t change is all the favorites you’ve come to expect on the regular menu. Prime rib, chicken Marsala, veal parm, they are not going ANYWHERE. Every day you can expect to see new specials that might end up on the permanent menu. Popular additions include: Carne Espeto, clam cakes, Buffalo chicken dip, grilled swordfish and chicken Madeira! Is your mouth watering yet?

One big change is the hours, they will be staying open later and opening for lunch during the week on Wednesday and Thursdays. Check out these weekly specials: on Tuesday buy two pizzas and get one 1/2 price; and on Wednesday, all you can eat fish and chip every Wednesday, all day for $14.00 (with the purchase of a beverage)

Here are their current hours of operation:
Tuesday- 4:00-8:30
•Wednesday-12:30-8:30
•Thursday- 12:30-8:30
•Friday and Saturday- 11:30-9:00
•Sunday-11:30-8:00

The history of The Blue Point is a fascinating one. The main dining room of the Blue Point Restaurant is an original Worcester Dining Car, built at the Worcester factory in the 1930’s. It was delivered by rail to New Bedford and opened as The Diner Blue Point Restaurant Eat-At BarDeluxe in 1939. Many of the diner’s customers worked at the nearby Wamsutta Mills. When the mills closed, so eventually did the diner. In the 1960’s an Acushnet man purchased it and moved it to it’s present location.

The diner (now restaurant) has been owned and operated by David and Lysa Riccardi since 1989. Blue Point Restaurant chef/owner, David Riccardi, has over 30 years experience in American, Italian, and French cuisine. Now its starting a new chapter and Juan and Natasha will help write the next 30 years of the story.

New Bedford’s Cafe Italia announces it’s permanently closing its doors

BREAKING:Posted on the Business’ Facebook page earlier today was this sad and unfortunate news:

“I would like to thank all of our amazing customers for all of your business and support. Due to the unfortunate circumstances of being diagnosed with cancer I no longer have the strength to keep my dream of Cafe Italia’ open. It has been amazing 13 years of living my dream and serving all of you that are not only customers but also have become friends. I bid you all farewell.” – Chef Nick Ricciardi.

Long considered one of the finest places to dine in the city, Cafe Italia drew quite a following and outgrew their small location in the South end. Their downtown spot had allowed them to serve many more patrons and grow the business. We wish Chef Nick, his family and employees nothing but the best, and we’ll keep him in our thoughts.

New Bedford Teachers Want Their Local Schools to Opt in to the Paid Family & Medical Leave Program

*Opinion* This letter was shared with us from a group of concerned local educators.

This started out as a New Bedford Voc Maternity and Paternity leave issue. However, after being told that the district had decided they “did not wish to reopen negotiations over the terms and conditions of parental leave …, because it does not have a bargaining obligation at this time,” it became clear that this is a public school system issue as a whole. Right now public school teachers at Voc, New Bedford, Dartmouth, and Fairhaven public schools offer no paid time off when welcoming a child into their family. Voc specifically allows women to use any accrued time off over an 8-week period unless they can provide a doctor’s note for additional four weeks. If an individual does not have enough accrued sick time they would have to go unpaid or come back to work much earlier than a medical professional would advise. Voc only offers 20 days of use of accrued sick time to new fathers, any same-sex parents that are not the birthing parents, and adoptive parents which is not very progressive.

If you are a public school teacher in Massachusetts you are responsible for loving, nurturing, teaching, and just simply being there for the children in your class. Unfortunately, teachers are not afforded the luxury of being able to give this same attention to our own children. As the rest of the state makes incremental strides forward when it comes to parental leave our school committees, superintendents, and city council members have made the decision, and I emphasize the word decision, to make the parental leave policy at this schools more restrictive than many other jobs in the state.

The public school system has refused to sign on to the state’s PFML (Paid Family Medical Leave) program, which is allowable as we are a municipality. There is a major contention right now with the public school vs. charter school system, but when we look at what the two systems can offer teachers early on in their career, when most young people are starting families there is clear value being placed on the faculty and staff at one establishment and not at the other. On the one hand, you have the public school system which has refused to sign on to the paid leave that PFML would provide for all new parents regardless of how they become parents. These 12 weeks to heal and bond with their children without adding to the financial burden of not getting a paycheck and still being responsible for insurance would apply to foster parents, adoptive parents, non-birthing parents, and the birthing parents. Since charter schools are not considered part of a municipality they are not excluded from PFML law and each new parent is automatically able to take 12 weeks of paid time off.

For a long time, the administration in surrounding districts has started a “competition” between the schools. This competition has created an unspoken division between the unions in these school districts, but no more. It is time for the teachers to take a stand and demand that our families get the priority level of the children in our class. We are asking that the current public school administrators understand that it takes three years to accrue enough sick time to take just eight weeks of maternity leave off, and that is if everything goes perfect over those three years. I think that we can all agree with the COVID-19 pandemic things have been far from perfect and people have had to forfeit a lot of sick time over the last couple of years.

We are hoping for a fair and consistent policy. We are hoping for mutual respect. We are hoping that it is recognized that we give the students in our class 100% every day and that our own families deserve the same. We would love for our administration, school committees, and council members to recognize the right thing to do and adopt PFML effective immediately, but as Malcolm X said, “By any means necessary.”

The decision-makers on this issue are often unaffected by the financial stress of having to go unpaid just after the birth of a child placed on a young family. Many teachers are living paycheck to paycheck which is something many of the higher-ups in the cities and towns we work in have not experienced in a long time if ever. To put some of these points into perspective, the average School Superintendent’s salary in both Dartmouth and New Bedford is $178,464, in Fairhaven, it is $178,078, and at New Bedford Voc which is one school, the current superintendent makes an annual salary of $170,000.

Signed,
Stephanie Canery, GNBVT
Michael Perry, GNBVT
Sarah Hartley, GNBVT
Cathy Houtman, New Bedford Public Schools

Whaling City Diner Announces That Its Closing Its Doors

Rumors posted in several community groups yesterday were confirmed today by various local media outlets: The Whaling City Diner is closing at the end of the week. The diner first opened in 2011 and has served tens of thousands of happy customers. We wish ownership well with their future ventures, they will be missed!

With the closing of The Vault (Greasy Luck) last week, conversation online has predictably turned to gloom and doom for the downtown area. Are these isolated events or the start of a larger trend?
How is your favorite restaurant doing these days? Are you finding it hard to support them due to price increases and overall inflation? Sound off in the comments!
