New Bedford Public Schools Tentative Bus Schedule, 2015-2016 School Year

The tentative bus schedule for the New Bedford Public Schools has been released.

For safety considerations and to ease travel concerns in inclement weather, some stops have been relocated to nearby main roads in order to ensure the safety of all children. School and transportation staff extend their thanks to families for their patience in the first week of school.

Please note that as always, these schedules are morning bus routes, and that drop-off times in the afternoon are done in the reverse order of morning pick-up.

New Bedford Public Schools transportation staff will be available for questions at 508-997-4511 ext. 2222 or ext. 2229.

24-year-old woman sexually assaulted in Cambridge

sexual-assault-cambridge1

Massachusetts State Police today continue to investigate Tuesday’s sexual assault of a 24-year-old woman along Memorial Drive in Cambridge. As part of that ongoing investigation, tonight we are releasing three surveillance images of a man on a bicycle who is believed to be the assailant.

The assailant is described as a white male, estimated to be in his late 20s to early 30s, with a stocky build and blonde or light brown hair. As previously mentioned, he was riding a bicycle prior to and after the assault. As the photos, taken from area surveillance cameras, indicate, the man was wearing dark clothing.

sexual-assault-cambridge3Anyone with information about this incident, or who thinks they recognize the person in these images, is urged to call Massachusetts State Police Troop H Detectives at (617) 740-7875.

The woman, a Boston resident, had left a Cambridge bar shortly before closing time early Tuesday morning and was walking toward the river. At approximately 2 a.m. she was near the Weld Boat House on Memorial Drive when she was approached by a man on a bicycle. As she tried to walk away, the assailant physically and sexually assaulted her. The victim screamed for help; two witnesses in the area heard her and ran toward her, at which point the assailant got back on his bike and fled.

The victim was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for treatment.

State Police have shared information about the assault with police in Cambridge and surrounding communities and at Harvard University. We are also investigating whether several other women who have reported a suspicious person in that area recently are describing the same person.

Proactive Targeted Ground Spraying Planned for New Bedford

The Bristol County Mosquito Control Project will conduct targeted ground spraying early on the morning of Thursday, August 20, 2015. This round of spraying will target areas including Buttonwood Park, Brooklawn Park, Fort Taber, Hazelwood Park, Riverside Park, Clasky Park, Ashley Park and the Poor Farm area. Spraying will take place between 2:00 am and sunrise on Thursday morning, weather permitting. Residents in the vicinity of the targeted areas may wish to close their windows Wednesday evening prior to the spraying.

The Bristol County Mosquito Control Project has been conducting surveillance in our area to track the potential for EEE and WNV carrying mosquitoes. Mosquito traps are in place to collect additional pools of mosquitoes and monitoring of mosquito populations will be on-going to assess the effectiveness of the spraying effort.

Residents may request a ground spray by calling the Bristol County Mosquito Control project at (508) 823-5253, between 8:00am – 2:00pm (June – September), or contacting them by E-mail at RequestBristolMCP@comcast.net.

The following precautions are advised:

Avoid Mosquito Bites

  • Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours – While mosquitoes are out at all hours of the day, their peak biting times are from dusk to dawn. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning. Otherwise, take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing, especially if you work or spend a lot of time outdoors.
  • Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Although it may be difficult to do when it’s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
  • Apply Insect Repellent when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. Mosquito-Proof Your Home

  • Drain Standing Water – Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.
  • Install or Repair Screens – Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.

Governor, Top Leaders Unveil New England’s Largest Solar Parking Canopy at Bristol Community College

Governor Charlie Baker and leaders from Bristol Community College (BCC) and its partners today unveiled New England’s largest solar parking canopy, a 3.2 megawatt solar array covering 800-parking spaces on five acres of the College’s Fall River Campus.

The array, built in partnership with the nonprofit energy-buying consortium PowerOptions and SunEdison, will generate more than 34 million kilowatt hours of energy each year, enough energy to power half of the campus’ electricity needs and will generate a 20-year savings of more than $1.75 million. The solar parking canopy avoids the emission of more than 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide each year, which is the same as removing approximately 5,000 cars from the road.

“Clean energy technology in Massachusetts is thriving, spurred by the Commonwealth’s innovative spirit, vibrant technology industry, strong public-private partnerships and world class academic institutions,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “Initiatives like the solar canopy at Bristol Community College both leverage opportunities at state facilities, and position the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while protecting the environment and moving towards our administration’s solar goal of 1,600 megawatts at homes, businesses, municipalities, and state agencies by 2020.”

“Bristol Community College is committed to sustainable energy and lessening our impact on the planet,” said John J. Sbrega, Ph.D., President of Bristol Community College. “This public-private collaboration is a model for energy generation and usage, and Bristol Community College is taking a leading role in finding solutions to address the enormous power needs of modern higher education.”

The solar canopy will supply power for the entire Fall River Campus, and is slated to be a major part of the Zero Net Energy plans for the John J. Sbrega Health and Science Building currently under construction. The building will house health sciences programs and life sciences laboratory learning spaces, which are notoriously huge energy consumers. The solar canopy, coupled with design choices for passive solar in the building itself and installation of geothermal wells, will help the College achieve this Zero Net Energy goal for the building.

For a 3:50 video showing the project and its scale and placement on the Fall River Campus, watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzavFQaSsvQ.

The joint projects have already garnered national attention for the innovative approach to renewable energy, including the Leading by Example award from the Commonwealth, Bellwether Finalist Award, and the Innovation award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). It has also been the subject of articles in many trade publications.

The canopy is the latest realization of the PowerOptions Solar Program, unveiled in 2012, to help nonprofits, government institutions, and municipalities enjoy the clean, cost-effective, and sustainable energy benefits of solar power.

“Our mission is to help state agencies and nonprofits navigate the complicated and costly energy market and reinvest any savings of time and money into their missions, so this canopy is a measurable win-win for BCC, its students and the entire Commonwealth,” said PowerOptions President and CEO Cynthia Arcate. “We’re delighted to be showing off the biggest canopy in the region but the best benefit is in allowing BCC to focus on and reinvest in its core mission.”

“A SunEdison solar parking canopy system of this size and scale is the perfect fit for Bristol Community College’s renewable energy needs,” said Steve Raeder, SunEdison managing director of commercial and industrial for the Eastern U.S. “Colleges, municipalities and other facilities with large parking areas can also benefit from the innovative SunEdison solar parking canopy system, which provides shade and shelter in addition to generating cost effective, clean solar energy. With solar projects like this, made possible by the governor’s forethought and effective renewable energy policies, the Commonwealth is well on its way to reaching its renewable energy goals.”

The College has signed a power purchase agreement with SunEdison to buy the power from the solar canopy for a guaranteed price over the next 20 years. Operation and maintenance of the solar canopy system will be performed by SunEdison. (TerraForm Power, Inc., a global owner and operator of clean energy power plants has acquired the solar project from SunEdison. This project was on the Call Right Projects List.)

Construction of the canopy began last fall and continued throughout the winter and spring. In addition to the significant savings, the solar array will provide those parking in the lots with a cover in foul weather.

All New Bedford Beaches Reopened to Swimming

The New Bedford Health Department has announced all of New Bedford’s beaches have been reopened for swimming today. Testing was conducted and the results of water samples collected from all municipal beaches indicate that water quality has returned to a level safe for swimming to resume at all New Bedford beaches.

On Tuesday afternoon, the New Bedford Health Department announced it would close New Bedford’s beaches to swimming for the remainder of the day and on Wednesday as a precaution in anticipation of significant rainfall. In the wake of the nearly 2 inches of heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, water sampling results confirmed that bacteria levels were elevated at the beaches on Wednesday and the proactive decision to close the beaches to swimming was prudent. Some sections of beach in New Bedford remained closed to swimming yesterday, Thursday, August 13, 2015, as the samples taken in those locations indicated that the water had not yet returned to a level safe for swimming. All areas are open to swimming today, August 14, 2015.

The state and federal government require the monitoring of water quality at public beaches during the bathing season. The New Bedford Health Department monitors the quality at New Bedford’s public beaches throughout the summer. City health officials will continue to monitor the water quality at all municipal beaches for any significant changes.

New Bedford Cultural Council to Offer Informational Session on Grant Guidelines

The New Bedford Cultural Council (NBCC) encourages individuals and groups that are interested in applying for a NBCC grant this year attend its information session on Wednesday, August 19th at 5:30pm at the New Bedford Public Library Main in the 3rd floor Meeting Room. Several Cultural Council members will be available to review the guidelines and address questions.

The NBCC is charged with making funding decisions that best meet the particular needs and priorities of the New Bedford community based on the annual Community Input Survey. Grants are awarded to individuals and organizations, with a maximum amount of $4,000.00 per individual or organization.

The 2015 NBCC Community Input Survey suggests that the NBCC support proposals that emphasize the following: youth and low income groups, public art projects, events that are free or offer reduced fees to low income New Bedford residents, projects that celebrate New Bedford’s cultural diversity and projects that emphasize collaboration with other groups. In addition, field trip grants have new requirements that coincide with the public’s opinion to feature field trips that are aligned with curriculum.

The annual Community Input Survey guides the group in adjusting guidelines to better reflect the interests of the public. The NBCC strongly urges new grant applicants, past applicants, and those who may have been turned down for funding in prior years, to attend the informational session for more information about the grant application process.

NBCC funds programs that promote excellence, access, education, and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences to improve the quality of life for city residents. To view all NBCC’s guidelines and access grant application forms please visit the 2015-2016 MCC website link (https://www.mass-culture.org/New-Bedford#).
