Previous story:

A 59-year-old New Bedford man was arrested in Virginia early this morning in connection to the ongoing investigation into Monday afternoon’s homicide in New Bedford, District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

As a result of our joint investigation with New Bedford Police, an arrest warrant against Alfonso Richards was lodged last night. Attempts to initially locate the suspect were unsuccessful.

BOLOs were sent out to various interstate agencies due to the suspicion that Mr. Richards had fled the state.

Early this morning, Mr. Richards was arrested without incident outside of Stafford County Virginia along I-95 by the Virginia State Police.

The arrest warrant lodged last night involved a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. However, that charge is expected to be upgraded to murder.

It is unclear at this time when the defendant will be transported back to Massachusetts to be arraigned.

New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office and Homicide Unit prosecutors are actively investigating a homicide, which occurred Monday afternoon in The City of New Bedford.

At around 2:45 pm New Bedford Police responded to the area near the intersection of Ashley Boulevard and Belleville Road for reports of a shooting.

When first responders arrived on scene, they located a male victim, later identified as Naurik Michel-Brown, 23, of New Bedford. The victim was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The investigation remains extremely active at this hour and no further information can be disseminated.
