On Friday morning, November 9th, at approximately 8:12 a.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Boston responded to reports of a bicyclist struck by a dump truck at the intersection of Museum Way and Monsignor O’Brien Highway. The bicyclist was reported to have serious injuries.
Upon arrival, troopers found that a bicyclist had been struck by a 2016 Western Star truck, driven by a 50-year-old man from Leicester. The bicyclist, a 24-year-old Cambridge man, had life-threatening injuries. The bicyclist was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, as a result of injuries sustained from the incident.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the truck was stopped at the intersection of Museum Way and O’Brien Highway, waiting to take a right turn onto Museum Way from O’Brien Highway. The bicyclist was also stopped, on the right side of the truck, waiting to take the same turn. When both the truck and bicyclist began to make their right turn, the bicyclist was struck by a tire of the truck.
The name of the bicyclist will not be released until next-of-kin notifications have been made. The name of the truck driver will not be released until the investigation determines if charges will be filed.
The center lanes north and southbound on O’Brien Highway were closed during the incident. All lanes were opened to traffic at 10:58 a.m., after reconstruction had been completed.
The remaining facts and circumstances are currently under investigation by troopers from the State Police Boston Barracks. State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Section (CMVES) State Police Troop H Headquarters, Cambridge Police Department, and Cambridge Fire Department, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MADOT) all assisted on scene.
