NOAA projecting New Bedford could get whalloped by tropical storm this weekend

Hurricane Lee is heading north up the Atlantic ocean towards the New England area. While its path can’t be predicted with 100% certainty, it appears it will miss the south coast and hit the Maine and Nova Scotia area.

With that being said, the NOAA storm tracker is predicting the south coast to get hit with a tropical storm while the hurricane moves past us. The storm is predicted to begin around 2am Saturday and continue for the rest of the day.

The yellow highlight on the storm tracker map indicates areas that will be experiencing a tropical storm.

Mayor Mitchell noted, “While it is too soon to determine whether the storm will affect our area, city departments have already begun planning and preparing for possible impacts out of an abundance of caution.”

It is important to prepare for power outages and flooding just in case the storm takes a turn for the worse and hits the south coast dead on.

New Bedford Police Department begins its Coin Challenge this weekend

“The New Bedford Police Department has partnered with “McDonald’s” and is announcing its first-ever “Coin Challenge” which will begin this Memorial Day weekend and continue throughout the Summer.

A challenge coin is a small metal coin or medallion bearing an organization’s emblem. It is given as a token of recognition or belonging and is often carried by members as a symbol of camaraderie. They originated in the military and are now used in various groups to honor achievements and strengthen unity. The New Bedford Police Department “Challenge Coin” (picture attached) is unique to our department.

One of our challenge coins will be hidden somewhere in the city of New Bedford. A clue will be posted on our Facebook page on Saturday morning at 9 AM. This clue will lead to either the coin itself, or another clue.

Once the coin is located, the winner will be able to keep it. The winner will also be given a gift card for McDonald’s and be eligible to win either a ride-along with a New Bedford police officer, a training session at the firing range, or a police escort.

Stay tuned in to our social media pages for clues and additional information.”

Weekend arrests by New Bedford Police Detectives include juvenile, net firearms and narcotics

” On March 31st, detectives assigned to the “Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau” executed a search warrant at 188 Weld St. #4. The target of the search warrant was GEOFFREY TERRY, 47. As a result of the search, detectives located approximately 115 grams of “crack” cocaine along with digital scales, packaging materials, and cellular phones. $170 in cash was seized by detectives as well.

Also in the apartment was TERRY’s live-in girlfriend, Ms. DESIREE COVELL, 53. Two licensed firearms belonging to COVELL were located. One such firearm had not been properly secured. Both firearms were seized, along with COVELL’s firearms license, as a result of the nature of her charges.

Both TERRY and COVELL were charged with trafficking in excess of 100 grams of “crack” cocaine and conspiracy to violate the controlled substance laws. COVELL was also charged with improper storage of a firearm. TERRY was previously convicted of possession of a class “B” substance with intent to distribute in 2010, making this a subsequent offense.

Det. Alan Kubik was the primary investigator.

On April 1st, detectives concluded an investigation into a 16-year-old juvenile suspected of carrying a gun. The investigation culminated in a traffic stop during which the juvenile was found to be in possession of a large-capacity firearm and an opened bottle of tequila. The weapon was found to be a loaded Glock 9mm pistol with a magazine capable of holding 17 rounds of ammunition and a mounted targeting laser affixed to it. The juvenile was taken into custody and charged with carrying a loaded, large-capacity firearm without a license and possession of liquor.

Massachusetts goats up for fee-waived adoption in Goat-A-Thon weekend

“Join us for our first-ever Fee-Waived Adoptathon for Goats!

Do these warmer, sunny days have you planning to expand your farm animal menagerie this spring? If you were thinking of adding goats to the mix, now is the time! Thanks to generous donors, all adoption fees for goats will be waived on Saturday April 1 and Sunday April 2, from 10am-3pm.

Nevins Farm still has a huge herd of goats in need of loving homes. We even still have some young goats who were born here last spring! These particular goats should remain a closed herd due to some potential disease exposure, meaning they cannot join an existing herd of goats (or other ruminants). But that also makes them great for folks who are newer to farm animals or have just recently gained the capacity to adopt!

Goats are very social animals, so we are aiming to send them home in groups of at least three so they will always have companionship and playmates. We have wethers and does of several different breeds (Nigerian Dwarfs, Alpines, and La Manchas), so no matter what you’re looking for, we likely have a match. You can find all of our adoptable goats here. Please inquire to learn more!

Registration for the event is recommended but not required. Sign up today to secure your spot! https://fb.me/e/1bLUC3jJj.”-MSPCA-Angell.

New Bedford Fire Department to light up Elm Street Garage for National Fallen Firefighters weekend

“In recognition of National Fallen Firefighters Weekend and the start of Fire Prevention Week, the lights at the Elm Street Garage will shine red from Sunday, October 9 through Saturday, October 15.

One hundred forty-eight names were read at the memorial service this year honoring those firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Fire Prevention Week highlights how important working smoke alarms, a clear exit path, and a well-planned escape route are in the event a fire occurs in your residence.

This week two fires occurred requiring residents to be rescued over ground ladders, aerial ladders, and interior stairwells. A third fire at a thirteen-unit dwelling rendered it uninhabitable.

In addition to some of the residents suffering injuries, approximately two dozen were displaced by these fires. These are a few recent examples that show fire safety should never be taken for granted.” -New Bedford Fire Department.
