Miss Z Photography specializes in drawing out the best moments and capturing them forever

A diamond is said to be forever, but since we don’t live forever it’s hardly relevant. The value really comes from metaphorically speaking – forever is one’s lifetime. So, in that sense one can say that a picture – which is also said to be worth a thousand words – is forever.

The stark difference between the two is how affordable and replaceable pictures are. Lose a picture, tear it accidentally or spill something on it? No worry – reprint it. In addition, once you look or gaze at your diamond for a few moments, you are pretty much done with it for a while. Most begin to “forget” it’s there.

The value with images is you get to relive those moments when they were taken. You get to reminisce, or travel down memory lane. How often have you looked at old pictures only to catch yourself smiling or laughing? Maybe ask yourself “What the hell was I thinking wearing that!?!” One image is enough to bring back many moments, smiles and laughs, let alone an entire album of them.

Since diamonds and images are forever, you certainly don’t want them to be out-of-focus, off-centered, or of people with red-eye. While many people have hi-tech phones or cameras that would make Ansel Adams green w/ envy, it seems there are photographers everywhere. Social media is replete with photographers of any and every event no matter how small or slight. With inexpensive software you can have photos cropped, red-eyes removed and any other imperfections removed. Then there are more expensive software where one can even remove not just image artifacts, but actual imperfections, or…create a flawless look.

No matter how expensive or amazing the device and no matter how good the software, there is no substitute for a good, professional eye with the ability, knowledge and knack of capturing and producing the ideal moments. When you have the talent there is no need for supplementary software and no device can draw out and create moments like an experienced photographer can. Some of the most iconic images ever taken have had the photographer create the moment with a little direction, coaxing, or nudging.

How would it feel to know that you can actually have access to one of the nation’s best photographers? That you could hire one of them capture some of the most important moments and/or some of the most important people in your life? Did you know that you one of these experienced, knowledgeable, and talented photographer’s actually works right here in New Bedford?

Specializing in maternity, newborn, birth, babies/toddlers, children and family, Abrah Zion of Miss Z Photography has had a studio on Union Street for years now and has been churning out some of the most amazing photography – as anyone who has seen her images can attest. But you don’t have to take my word for it – each year she wins accolades, awards and kudos from her peers and clients.

We’ve mentioned many of these awards in past spotlights on Miss Z Photography. This year alone, she won first place in the Best of the SouthCoast for Photographers, the Parents’ Choice Award from Beauty and Lifestyle Mommy Magazine for the 3rd year in a row, been published twice in the international magazine “TAoPaN – The Art of Pregnancy and Newborn” among others. In 2017, she photographed 87 newborns, 55 babies (6 months to 2 years) 26 maternity sessions, 9 sets of twin newborns, 27 children ages 3 and up!

Some of my personal favorite images and judging by responses, that of many others – is watching the fun “Smash and Splash” sessions for 1st birthdays. Abrah plans the session ahead of time with the parents and creates a theme – simple or elaborate – that is perfect for the family. Everything is provided – the whole setup, a matching cake from Pink Box desserts in Dartmouth, and a coordinating outfit so the parents don’t have to ruin their own clothing. “Grow with me” plans include newborn, sitter sessions (6 – 9 months) and the first birthday “Smash and Splash.”

Can you imagine the sheer joy that is elicited from the tykes as they are smashing away at the cake? And since you don’t have to concern yourself at all about the mess or the clean-up, you get to actually relish the moment to its fullest. It’s not done after the smashing! The baby then goes into warm water with bubbles and rubber duckies to splash around and allow Abrah to catch even more adorable photos and moments. Finally the session is completed with photos of family together.

The sessions are adapted as the kids get “older” – for the 18 month olds Abrah offers a “In my parent’s shoes” sessions where the parents bring their clothes – jackets, hats, shoes, sunglasses, and the kids dress up in them. For 2 year olds there is a fun paint session where she provides an outfit, an 11×14 canvas and the baby gets a bunch of non-toxic finger paints and a paint brush. The baby gets to paint the canvas….or themselves! The parents get to take home more than pictures, but their child’s artwork.

The 3 year olds get more variety with a choice between sessions: glitter, superhero, tea party, car, or train. Of course, all the outfits, props and are provided and that includes a massive wardrobe of gowns and dresses for the little ladies. Cleanliness and hygiene are a top priority: Abrah and her assistant wash their hands, keep hand-sanitizer handy throughout the session and all props are washed in free and clear detergent after each use.

Alternatively Abrah offers maternity sessions which include a complimentary professional hair and makeup job and she has a similar huge wardrobe like the one she has for the babies. Either parent can sit in on the session and that means, of course, dads don’t have to feel left out! She also offers a “Rainbow Session” for a baby that is born after a loss – either by miscarriage, stillbirth, or a baby that passed early on. She has props, setups and themes – both simple and elaborate – to commemorate the rainbow baby of hope.

The studio is fully stocked – diapers, wipes, brand new pacifiers, snacks, water, tea/coffee. All the parents have to bring is their family and adorable child(ren) and food for their newborn – everything else is supplied.

All the special moments that she captures can be placed on a variety of heirloom quality products – gorgeous canvases, metal prints, mounted prints, photo albums, acrylic blocks, personalized jewelry and more. Two weeks after your photo session, you’ll return for an in-person ordering session where we go over all of your images and she can show you exactly what your photos will look like on your own walls before they purchase anything.

Once a purchase is made, the images will be processed, checked for quality, developed, mounted if chosen, and then even delivered to you if you live within a hour away.

Curious about more? Make a no-obligation consultation today and only can you meet her, but you can see more of her work, check out the gorgeous products she offers as well as her full price list. Then if you decide to, you can schedule a session.

The diamond – the forever – is in the photographs and the feelings and memories they conjure. Abrah is one of the more capable, talented, friendly experienced photographers you will find in the region – even the country for that matter.

Miss Z Photography – New Bedford maternity photo shoot

We had a chance to film behind the scenes of a maternity photo shoot with Miss Z Photography in New Bedford. Abrah does an amazing job and shows us what it takes to shoot and produce some amazing photos!

Spotlight: Cake smash and splash with New Bedford’s Miss Z Photography

Here’s a behind the scenes look at a cake smash and splash with Abrah of Miss Z Photography in New Bedford, MA. Abrah is an award winning maternity, newborn, baby, children and family photographer located on 227 Union Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Miss Z Photography turns fleeting moments into a lifetime of memories

Last year we showcased one of the nation’s premier maternity photographers, Abrah Zion of Miss Z Photography, in a spotlight article. Since then a lot has happened. A lot.

Abrah has entered the lives of scores of people across the South Coast. I don’t mean solely as a business entity, but also as a person who has found their life’s passion and a way to integrate relationships with it. I come across a lot of people who are passionate about what they do, but the exuberance and excitement that come from Abrah when discussing her passion are on another level.

Her entire energy changes when the topic of her photography comes up. Here is someone whose first and fondest childhood memories revolve around a camera – a gift from her father – and snapping anything and everything in sight. While sunsets, sunrises, flowers, natural scenery and their ilk were targets, there was something special about living, breathing, dynamic targets.

Maternal photography is one of many services that Miss Z Photography offers.

Fondly poring over black and white images in the family’s photo albums is responsible for many of her favorite childhood memories. The albums captivated her. These moments conveyed early on the sheer potency of images; the feel of holding the photographs in your hands and passing them along; the aroma of the aged vintage photos and paper it was attached to; the intimacy that came through sharing them with family and friends who sat alongside you. She knew then and there that life, memories, and moments would be her prized targets. She wanted to share with the world everything that was conveyed in the time spent with these albums.

In pursuit of this aim, she has rubbed shoulders with giants in the photography world and is constantly honing and developing her craft. She has learned directly from world renown newborn and maternity photographer to the stars Ana Brandt. She is a member of PPA – Professional Photographers of America, PPAM – Professional Photographers of America, Massachusetts division and NAPCP – the National Association of Professional Child Photographers.

She has also collected some pretty prestigious awards along the way. This January she won the Beauty and Lifestyle Mommy Magazine 2015 Parent’s Choice award – quite a strong declaration by the people. One of the top publications in the photography world is Photography Magazine who listed her as one of the best newborn photographers in Massachusetts for 2016. When the critics and the people alike say you are one of the best you’re doing something right and have something special.

It doesn’t stop there: she graciously volunteers her services to “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep,” an organization of professional photographers who dedicate their time and talent to photographing still born babies for parents as part of the bereavement and healing process.

There’s no limit to the possibilities when it comes to themes.

Do you get the idea that she lives, breathes, sleeps and eats photography? What is the point I am illustrating here? That you would be hard pressed to find someone who cares as much, who is dedicated to doing her best, and who is determined to providing you with the finest quality photographs on planet earth. If you are looking for a way to document those fleeting memories that happen only once a lifetime, you’d be hard pressed to find someone better!

You may be asking “What does she specifically do? Just take pictures of my baby?” Of course, my words can’t do anywhere close to the justice that her images can, but in a nutshell if it’s related to maternity, newborns, babies, or families she excels at it. It’s her niche – photography is such a deep field that the top photographers narrow that field down. Specialization is the name of the game and being able to take world-class photographs of a nature, doesn’t mean it translates to photographs of newborns or vice versa.

That means if you want these moments captured, you want a photographer that spends all her/his time in one niche. Someone who knows the ins and outs, is highly experienced and is on the cutting edge of the field.

One of the newest services Miss Z has added that has become incredibly popular is the “Birthday Smash and Splash.” You and Abrah will discuss a theme that best fits your baby and choose the cutest, funniest, or sweetest one. On the day of the shooting, a fully themed backdrop will be presented and a matching themed cake will be waiting for your baby to smash. Talk about a photo opp!

After your baby enjoys making his or her mess, and you are laughing and smiling from ear to ear, the “splash” part comes in. A small bubble bath awaits, raising the cute factor through the stratosphere. You can blow bubbles to get his or her attention and create more smiles and photo opportunities.

Dad doesn’t have to be left out!

This is certainly not a “Bring your cute baby by and I’ll snap some photos.” session. There’s quite the bit of thought behind it. There’s a clear passion and love for the subject matter. I mean, who doesn’t love babies? The manliest man will have no problem declaring how cute newborns are! To provide an atmosphere, the bring the best out of the baby (or mom or dad), and to create the photogenic moments takes much more than someone pushing a button behind a fancy camera.

These moments will happen once and be gone forever – as a father of a 14 year old, I can vouch for the speed with which our children grow up is astoundingly fast. While I took lots of pictures as any proud father would, I took pictures with a cruddy, cheap camera (smartphones with high-resolution cameras didn’t exist yet) then stored them in boxes for later perusal. Struggling with sport-related memory issues, if I didn’t have these images those moments would be gone forever. Pulling those boxes out and browsing through those images not only brings back those forgotten memories, but they are so incredibly powerful that they actually get a 14 year old teenager to put her phone away. How many things can do that these days?!

The two of us not only take great delight in passing the photos back and forth, but there’s plenty of laughter, smiles, and the occasional sadness when we come across family we’ve lost in the 14 years she’s been on the planet. An hour can pass by easily and the intimacy and bonding moment is something I can’t put a price on.

My only regret is that I wish that I had better quality photos in terms of technique – less red eye, less blur, better centering, fewer cut-off heads, more spontaneity, and of course I wish I had better quality, more durable paper that would stand the test of time.

This illustrates the sheer power and massive value of “physical” pictures – images on paper being passed, hovering over shoulders and shoving them in each other faces “Hey look at your pants in this one! HA HA!” The feel, the energy, the atmosphere you get with physical pictures is superior to crowding around a computer screen. Having that box or photo album is far easier than trying to find where I put that blasted minuscule USB or where I left the CD that when I am lucky to find, is scratched.

They grow up fast – capture as many moments as you can!

You don’t want to trust this sort of thing to an amateur photographer, but someone who is world-class, acclaimed, passionate and more than capable. Someone who will provide customized, individualized service with a personal relationship. Someone who will give lots of unmentioned extras. This is what sets Abrah and Miss Z Photography from the rest.

After the photo shoot, you can set up a custom “in-person” ordering session and will spend time deciding on your prints and choose which ones to keep a la carte. You can also determine the size and number of photographs and whether they will be framed or not. The images are mounted on a matboard and are printed on high quality archival paper that is also fade resistant. They can be finished with a protective high end linen texture or on thick, highly textured fine arts paper called Hahnemuhle prints. Prefer canvas (including Lagniappe) or metal prints? You can have that. Want a high quality photo book or album? She’ll help you there as well.

Want to use a credit card? Want a payment plan? Looking for gift certificates to give a special gift to a friend or family member who is pregnant or just had a newborn? All covered by Miss Z.

If you want to read what people are saying, you can check out the testimonials on the website or Facebook. Want to see examples of her work or find out more about Abrah? Check out her blog or join the newsletter. If you sign up for the newsletter, not only will you get a 15 page e-book titled How to take more memorable photos of your children.” but you will also be among the first to know about model opportunities, specials, and fun happenings at Miss Z Photography studios.

Miss Z Photography specializes in milestones for newborn, maternity, boudoir, and more

One of many creative backdrops at Miss Z Photogrpahy.

There is no more powerful way to get a flood of memories than poring over pictures. Who hasn’t cracked open a photo album and had old memories flood in? These awoken memories evoke a smile, laugh or intense emotions – happiness, anger, melancholy or longing for days gone by. Life without pictures would be flat. Something would seem to be missing!

These days with the advent of smart-phones we eagerly capture important life events. We take scores of photos of newborns, an anniversary, birth or other milestones. We also love capturing “minor” events like dinner with besties, a colorful sunset, or foliage. Images are threaded throughout our day and rarely a day goes by that we don’t see an image whether physical or digital shots on the web or social media.

The relaxed atmosphere makes it easy even for siblings to have a natural smile!

While capturing fun, light daily events doesn’t require any talent – especially with apps and software that can remove red eye, crop and resize – it isn’t fun to get home after taking score of pictures of family visiting a newborn to find out that we forgot to include someone. Or that the image is blurry, unfocused, or the lighting is poor. Or that we should have used a genuine camera instead of the phone. You have such a limited time with a newborn – you don’t want to miss out on capturing those early moments in the proper fashion.

Besides, it’s easy to get so lost in the taking of pictures that we miss the event.

It is prudent and practical to leave capturing photographs of the most important milestones in our lives to the experts. To those who have years of experience with lighting, focus, and other technical aspects. These images will be glanced at over and again through our entire lives and even passed down from generation to generation. Having poor images of these great moments is something one could regret. Having fantastic, professional images of these events is a much better alternative!

Miss Z Photography is a fully licensed and insured New Bedford based business specializing in maternity, birth, newborn, babies, children, families, head shots, boudoir, functions and more. Owner and photographer extraordinaire Abrah Zion was emphatic that her primary goal is to “…create family memories that will last a lifetime.”

Having had multiple discussions with Abrah and spent hours poring over her work, I can vouch for her energy, enthusiasm, passion and ability. Passion is the ingredient that is always lacking in inferior work in any field. Lots of passion is a key ingredient to success and driving force to learn, improve and excel. Abrah has this in abundance as anyone who has spent any time listening to her discuss her work or has had actually experienced it.

A warm, welcoming, professional setting.

This love for photography started at an early age as she looked over old black and whites of her parents and grandparents. Studying the story behind each family snapshot and yearbook taught her the power of images and she began to develop an interest in photography as an art and science. Her first camera was “…one of those dinky ones in the 1980’s that took a 110 cartridge for film. But I loved it and took it everywhere and took pictures of everyone and everything!”

Born at St. Lukes Hospital, Abrah has deep roots in the city she loves. When she was laid off from her job in corporate America, she had difficulty finding work, so felt perhaps it was the time to take a chance with her love of photography. Opening a studio here in New Bedford was an obvious choice for her. She is a big supporter of the local economy and feels that New Bedford has a ton of character and history. Four years later, she hasn’t looked back.

Abrah takes photography and her customers very seriously. As talented as she is, she is constantly seeking out new skills and spending time with some of the powerhouses in photography like renowned newborn and maternity photographer to the stars Ana Brandt. She is fully licensed with city, state and with federal governments and is also fully insured. In addition, she belongs to the Professional Photographer’s of America.

What Abrah discovered to be particularly rewarding was that her love for photography was matched by the powerful affect her images have had on family, friends and customers. She eagerly looks forward to seeing the expressions on people’s faces and hearing the responses.

Smiles like this one can be relived and enjoyed for years.

These connections are important for her as she has an old-world outlook on her business. Relationship is of the utmost importantance for her. She wants and needs to know her customers leading up to a session. She feels that knowing who they are and what they are hoping to get out of the session is integral to a successful photo shoot or what she calls an investment. She feels that her customers are investing in their future, so she wants to make sure she meets their high demands and expectations by doing the best possible job that she can.

Having said that her sessions are very laid back and lots of fun!

Her products themselves, are very high end – the prints come from top professional printers that only professional photographers utilize. When you see and touch one of her prints, you instantly realize the superior quality and know it’s something that is going to last. She won’t waste all that time, effort and energy to place the images on anything but the best – you can proudly display your family as true artwork on framed photos and heirloom quality canvases.

All of her photographs are also redundantly backed up to three different places – computer, external drive and cloud. This is a direct result of some horror stories that she has heard about people spending money on a session only to find out the images have been wiped. It’s a regret neither the photographer or the customer wants to experience – that captured opportunity and accompanying memories are lost forever. You won’t have to worry about that with Miss Z Photography.

Miss Z Photography also does boudoir and maternity sets.

When asked about some helpful pointers for amateurs like me who have ten thumbs, she said “I think a lot of people don’t get in close enough when taking photos of their family and pets. They take it from far away. You really want to get up close and personal and catch those expressions. Don’t be afraid to zoom in and frame the face(s). Utilize natural light! It looks so much better than flash and you’ll avoid red eye!”

In addition to the fine photography that Abrah offers, she is a proud supporter and volunteer for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a non-profit organization of professional photographers who offer their services for free to parents who have lost a baby. She also volunteers for Capturing Hopes Photography another group of professionals who specifically photograph babies in the NICU (Neo Intensive Care Unit).

Miss Z Photography has made hundreds of people in the greater New Bedford area and beyond happy, happy. Her website has real world stories as does her Facebook reviews page which is currently at a stellar 4.8 stars out of 5 stars. Gift certificates can be purchased directly online as is the pricing for her sessions or investments.

If you would like to see more of Abrah’s talent, you can check out more photos on her Facebook, website portfolio or any of the links provided below. She also frequently has some great promotions so be sure to check back every now and then.

Body of missing 65-year-old Massachusetts hiker found in New Hampshire’s White Mountains

“Cutt’s Grant, NH – The body of William Donovan, a hiker who had been missing since April 16, 2024, was located by a search team in the Dry River around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 13. The search team was directed to this new investigation area after gear and a jacket believed to have belonged to Donovan was found over the weekend in the river by hikers. This evidence helped focus the search area and Donovan’s body was ultimately located approximately 400 feet upstream from where the jacket was discovered.

The initial search team was comprised of conservation officers and drone teams from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue (AVSAR), New England K9 (NEK9), and Upper-Valley Wilderness Response Team (UVWRT). Donovan’s body was located just over 2.5 miles in from Route 302. The search team worked for hours to free the body from beneath a large boulder, but due to its size, freezing water temperatures, and the lack of tools required to move such a boulder, additional resources were called to assist.

Twin Mountain Fire Department provided the necessary additional gear and tools and dozens of volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue (AVSAR), Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue (PEMI SAR), and Mountain Rescue Services (MRS) all responded to assist.

These volunteers hiked in the additional equipment and then assisted with carrying Donovan’s body. The teams arrived back on Route 302 with the body at 6:40 p.m.

It is not known what brought Donovan into the Dry River Wilderness. It is also unknown how he entered the water, but it appears he was somehow forced from the ridge by high winds or other adverse weather conditions between Mt. Monroe and Mt. Eisenhower.

The body was relayed to the State Medical Examiners Office in Concord for autopsy.

No further information is available at this time.”-New Hampshire FIsh & Game.

“Hi New Bedford friends – – this is *extremely urgent.* PLEASE READ THIS.

My daughter Dezzi and her friend Melanie skipped school today. Dezzi goes to Normandin; we believe Melanie met her there, and they wandered off. Dezzi is 5 foot five, average weight, wearing a dark shoe, probably light sweatpants, and almost definitely Nike sneakers.

The first pic is a recent picture of Dezzi, the second is a recent picture of her friend. They’re on foot, with no devices, and Dezzi only has a couple of dollars on her.

They’re likely to be somewhere in the north end of New Bedford. Dezzi was carrying a red Spider-Man backpack the last we knew. Please call New Bedford Police at (508) 991-6340 immediately if you see either of them. Thank you.”-Scott Bishop.
