On Tuesday at approximately, 5:00pm the Andover Police and Fire Departments and EMS received reports of a pedestrian versus tractor-trailer accident downtown.

Upon arrival at Elm Square at the intersection of Elm and Main streets, first responders learned that a Sysco tractor-trailer had struck a 6-year-old child in a crosswalk. The gender and name were withheld.

Andover Police Chief Patrick Keefe said that several other people in the area at the time of the crash were taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure in spite of the fact they were not struck. Keefe said the driver of the Sysco truck did stop and immediately cooperated with police.

Sysco also responded to this crash in a statement, writing “The Sysco family is heartbroken to learn of the tragic death of a pedestrian today in an incident involving one of our vehicles from Sysco Boston. We offer our condolences and prayers to the individual’s family and community and are grieving with them for their loss.”

Multiple eyewitnesses on the scene reported that this particular intersection was incredibly busy and dangerous. For several hours Massachusetts State and Local Police remained on the scene collecting data and had the truck towed. The accident remains under investigation.
