51-year old man crushed by forklift at Stop & Shop distribution center in Freetown

At 12:38 a.m., Freetown Police and Fire responded to a 911 call reporting an industrial accident at the Stop & Shop distribution center in Freetown. They performed first aid until an ambulance transported the victim to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, where he was pronounced dead, Freetown Police Chief Carlton E. Abbott said.

As a tractor trailer was pulling away from a loading dock, the victim fell between the truck and loading dock, and a forklift used for unloading material from the trailer fell on top of the man and crushed him, Chief Carlton Abbott said.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as 51-year old Alphonse Ferent of Stoughton.

Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the district attorney’s office, said no foul play is suspected, and he added that the incident is under investigation by police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
