31-year old New Bedford man arrested in Welcome Street tire robbery stabbing

A second person was arrested Monday in connection with an assault Aug. 7 in a backyard on Welcome Street.

Roberto Gonzalez, 31, of 159 Hunter St., New Bedford, was arrested on charges of assault and battery, larceny over $250 and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

He is charged in connection with the assault on two men, ages 38 and 19, with a knife as they attempted to stop him from stealing tires and rims from their backyard on Welcome Street.

One of the victims of the assault recognized Gonzalez Monday as one of the attackers when he saw him in the area of South First Street.

Odilio Benique, 40, of 90 Main St., Apt. 1, Fairhaven, was previously arrested on charges of assault and battery, larceny over $250 and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the incident.

The victims told police at that time that a second male was involved.
