20 Things To Do This Weekend (Sep. 15 – Sep.-17)

We’ll have a little bit of rain this weekend – some showers on Friday and Saturday. However, it will be warm with temperatures that will be in the mid-70s. In general it will be humid. Sunday will be the best day of the bunch with no rain forecasted and mostly sunny. So, nothing stopping a hardy New Englander from enjoying the many fun things going on.

Pirates & Privateers Presentation (Fairhaven) (10:00am)
Hear tales of pirates, Revolutionary War era privateers, and historical Fort Phoenix, presented by Greybeard, an 18th century gunner from the privateer sloop Broome, Abigail Black, a ship’s doctor who grows herbal remedies in her village garden when she’s not at sea, and Andrew the Powder Monkey, a boy who knows how to load and fire a cannon. Learn which things really just myths based on fiction, the difference between pirates and “legal” privateers, and why grog wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

For little children ages 0 to 3, Toddler Time is a foundational program which will help your little one begin to develop and grow those early literacy and language skills that will stay with them throughout their life. Saturday, September 16th

September Cleanup & Volunteer Appreciation Event (8:30am-12:00pm)
Join us for the final cleanup of the season, hosted by Barry’s Fine Wine & Spirits. The cleanup will run from 8:30-10:30 followed immediately by our volunteer appreciation event. Free T-shirts, water bottles, coffee & donuts, Domino’s Pizza and a thank you cake. Registered volunteers receive a free raffle ticket for prizes donated by local businesses. Parking lot at the corner of Elm and Summer Streets.

One of the great challenges of summer — especially for parents — is figuring out what to do to keep the family happy and entertained. Visiting a museum is a great way to fill up those weekend hours. There are dozens of museums in the Cape Cod area, offering experiences to interest virtually anyone. Sea Kayaking Adventure Series (9:00am-12:00pm)
Join the WLCT and Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures (OSKA) for a tour of the Westport Rivers this summer! Explore conserved lands from the water and learn about the rich history of land protection in Westport. Each expedition will run 3 to 4 hours and cost $60.00 per participant with a limit of 10 participants per trip. Participants will meet at OSKA located at the Head of Westport on the morning of their expedition. From there, paddlers will be transported to the put-in location and outfitted with equipment. Kayaking equipment, transportation, certified guides, and a light snack will be provided for all participants. Join us on September 16th at 3PM for a live production of Romeo and Juliet in Buttonwood Park. Bring your family and a lawn chair and settle in for an amazing performance from local actors portraying a modern, distopian, interpretation of Romeo and Juliet. Fall Fest Block Party with music by The Freeze Pops (3:00pm-7:00pm)
The Fall Fest Block Party is a 21+ event featuring music, entertainment, buffet dinner, and drinks. In 2017 the event will feature music by The Freeze Pops. This is a fundraising event for the Downtown Taunton Foundation designed to be fun, casual, and inviting to citizens from all walks of life. DA Quinn’s Free Family Field Day Sunday at UMass Dartmouth (11:00am-3:00pm)
The annual event, which is being co-sponsored by Kia of Dartmouth and Taunton Federal Credit Union, includes dozens of fun outdoor family activities for people of all ages to enjoy. The Free Family Field Day will feature a rock climbing wall, a petting zoo, food tents, contests that will test your skills in popular sports, a 64 foot inflatable obstacle course, potato sack and three-legged races, hula hoop contests, tug of wars, dizzy bat races, a giant volleyball game and so much more. There will also be numerous resource stations and informational tables set up from dozens of local organizations. At UMass Dartmouth’s Cressy Field, 285 Old Westport Road in North Dartmouth.

NBx2: The New Bedford Neighborhood Bus Tour (1:30pm-6:00pm)
Get on the bus for a fresh look at some of the people, places and ideas that drive New Bedford forward. We’ll start downtown and then hit the North, West, and South End neighborhoods in a chartered bus with tour guides, Mark Fuller of the New Bedford Preservation Society and Carl Simmons of the Friends of the New Bedford Free Public Library. Meet at beautiful Grace Episcopal Church beginning at 1:30 p.m. and take the opportunity to discover this architectural gem before boarding the bus at 2:00 p.m.

Our first stop will be a surprise destination in the North End. Find out what it is by clicking “Join” or “interested” on this event page. We’ll announce it the week before we roll! Back on the bus, the next stop is United House of Prayer for All People’s Soul Food Kitchen in the West End at 419 Kempton Street. Here, you’ll want to grab some lunch at their delicious cafeteria-style, weekend pop-up eatery.

The South End’s Youth Opportunities Unlimited on Brock Avenue is the final neighborhood stop before returning downtown for a rooftop social at Slainte Irish Pub on Union Street. The Medicinal Herbs of New England (3:00pm-4:30pm)
Join Jenny Hauf, owner of Muddy River Herbalist, for an introduction to the world of New England’s medicinal herbs. Learn about herbs found wild in our fields, forests, and lawns, as well as the many plants that thrive in our gardens. Come on out to one of New Bedford’s best kept secrets for an afternoon of lore and an armful of practical know-how for your medicine cabinet.
