Ah, brisk nights and mornings of fall with cool days. This is a wonderful time of year for events and activities. While we will be having some clouds and showers here and there this weekend, the temperatures will be very pleasant in the mid-70s. Nothing keeping an umbrella handy can’t solve. So, check out the many things going on in greater New Bedford and beyond.

Friday, October 6th

Pirates & Privateers Presentation (Fairhaven) (10:00am)
Hear tales of pirates, Revolutionary War era privateers, and historical Fort Phoenix, presented by Greybeard, an 18th century gunner from the privateer sloop Broome, Abigail Black, a ship’s doctor who grows herbal remedies in her village garden when she’s not at sea, and Andrew the Powder Monkey, a boy who knows how to load and fire a cannon. Learn which things really just myths based on fiction, the difference between pirates and “legal” privateers, and why grog wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Live music with acts like Paradise Kitty at the Greasy Luck Brewpub.

Tales For Tots (10:30am-11:00am)
Join a park interpreter to hear a story outside in the sunshine on the grassy meadow. Bring a blanket or chair. FREE. Moves into the Visitor Center in inclement weather. Fall River Heritage State Park, Davol Street, Fall River, MA.

Debra Cowan in Concert (7:00pm-8:30pm)
Following a life-long desire to sing and perform, Debra Cowan left her job as a middle school math teacher in 1997 and went to live in Edinburgh, Scotland for six months. There she learned the art of unaccompanied singing and upon her return to the USA in 1998 began traveling all over New England performing at any open mike within 100 miles of her new home in Springfield, Massachusetts. Over a decade later, she is now a full-time performer who bridges the old and new with a refreshing stage presence. She has released four full-length recordings, all of which have earned praise on both sides of the Atlantic. She tours extensively in the United Kingdom and in North America and can also be seen on stage with her good friend, singer and musician John Roberts.New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, 38 Bethel Street, New Bedford.

Paradise Kitty Live in the Vault at Greasy Luck Brewpub (9:30pm-11:30pm)
Downtown New Bedford’s hottest newest destination. The brewpub and event venue is set within a former bank building featuring original vault doors and a truly historic feel. Saturday, October 7th

Rise And Shine Yoga At Fort Phoenix (8:30am-9:30am)
Join South Coast Yoga every Saturday morning at Fort Phoenix to start your weekend with an energizing yoga practice! Class is only a $5 drop in, or you can purchase a class card. Class incorporates movement, meditation, balance and strength. This is open to all levels, newbies to advanced. Please bring a mat/towel and water. The beginning of the season can be chilly, so layers are good! Children are welcome, as long as they can sit quietly for the hour (10 and up usually). Class passes are $25 for 5 classes and can be used at Fort Taber and Fort Phoenix classes all summer.

Cranberry Harvest Celebration (10:00am-4:00pm)
The Cranberry Harvest Celebration is a great way to see and learn about the picturesque cranberry harvest while enjoying some old fashioned family fun. Watch as we harvest the crimson berries continuously each day. You can even put on a pair of waders and step into a corral of berries! Visit educational and historical displays, view the spectacular landscape and harvest by taking a helicopter ride, enjoy live cooking demonstrations by some of the area’s finest chefs and culinary professionals, shop the marketplace with over 40 juried exhibitors from around the region, listen to local musicians, and peruse the farmers’ market and food concession areas for the best fare around.

Children’s activities include pony, paddle boat, train, live entertainment, wagon rides and much more. The event is held rain or shine. No pets are allowed. Last bus to the cranberry bog departs at 3:30 p.m. 158 Tihonet Road, Wareham, MA.

Steps for Hurricane Relief (NB Wellness Walk) (10:00am)
Our steps will go towards relief efforts after the recent hurricanes to hit Texas and Florida. All proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross. Fall Crystal Mini Show< (Westport) (8:30am-3:30pm)
Who’s ready for another Crystal Mini Show? Lots of new arrivals…including some very rare, hard-to-find crystals. Plus! I’ll be unveiling some exciting new products. And the popular Mystery Crystal Eggs return – this time in the form of Halloween Chakra Pods!! And yes, Club Members will get Early Access between the hours of 8 – 10 am. Hope to see you there! Manjiro Japanese Festival (Fairhaven) (10:00am-5:00pm)
On Saturday, October 7, a Manjiro Festival will be held to celebrate the historical ties with Japan and the 30th anniversary of the signing of a Sister City agreement between Fairhaven and Tosahimizu, Japan, the hometown of Manjiro. This years’s festival will be held on Center Street from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be Japanese and American music and food, martial arts demonstrations, taiko drummers, flower arranging, raffles, booths featuring food and crafts, a tea ceremony, and much more! Captain Whitfield’s house at 11 Cherry Street will be open, as will be the Old Stone Schoolhouse at 40 North Street. Through the day there will be bus tours to the sites associated with Manjiro.

Medicinal Roots & Fire Cider Workshop (1:00pm-3:00pm)
This herbal medicine workshop will focus on seasonal, local remedies. We will discuss the harvest and preparation of medicinal roots as well as their uses. Learn the basics of using food as medicine and how to make your own natural remedies using roots, including decoctions, tinctures, and fire cider*. We will sample some finished fire cider and demonstrate the making of a new batch. Workshop will cover root herbs that are both cultivated and grow wild on the farm. *Fire Cider is a traditional herbal remedy used for preventing colds and flus. New Bedford Artists and Artisans Rural Cemetery Tour (2:00pm-6:00pm)
Historic portrayals in period costume will take place at several of the grave sites of New Bedford’s internationally famous artists and artisans including but not limited to; painters William Allen Wall, Robert Swain, Frances Gifford, Albert Cook Church and female painter Minna Grumbt Webb, early African American photographer James Reed as well as glass artisans Gundersen brothers Hjalmar and Robert. Paint Party Fundraiser For FRCAA (4:00pm-6:00pm)
We’re doing it again!!! The 12th Annual New Bedford Seaport Chowder Festival will have local Restaurants, Caterers and Assisted Living Facilities competing for your vote! Come sample delicious chowders, soups and stuffed quahogs and cast your vote for your favorite one!! Location: City Pier 3.

Blessing of the Animals (2:00pm-3:00pm)
Saint Peters-on-the-Canal will be hosting its annual Blessing of the Animals on the front lawn of the Church, 165 Main Street, in Buzzards Bay. All animals are welcome together with their owners. This event is held annually on a day close to the Feast Day of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and birds.
