Ah, brisk nights and mornings of fall with cool days. This is a wonderful time of year for events and activities. While we will be having some clouds and showers here and there this weekend, the temperatures will be very pleasant in the mid-70s. Nothing keeping an umbrella handy can’t solve. So, check out the many things going on in greater New Bedford and beyond.

Friday, October 6th

Pirates & Privateers Presentation (Fairhaven) (10:00am)
Hear tales of pirates, Revolutionary War era privateers, and historical Fort Phoenix, presented by Greybeard, an 18th century gunner from the privateer sloop Broome, Abigail Black, a ship’s doctor who grows herbal remedies in her village garden when she’s not at sea, and Andrew the Powder Monkey, a boy who knows how to load and fire a cannon. Learn which things really just myths based on fiction, the difference between pirates and “legal” privateers, and why grog wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Live music with acts like Paradise Kitty at the Greasy Luck Brewpub.

Tales For Tots (10:30am-11:00am)
Join a park interpreter to hear a story outside in the sunshine on the grassy meadow. Bring a blanket or chair. FREE. Moves into the Visitor Center in inclement weather. Fall River Heritage State Park, Davol Street, Fall River, MA.

Debra Cowan in Concert (7:00pm-8:30pm)
Following a life-long desire to sing and perform, Debra Cowan left her job as a middle school math teacher in 1997 and went to live in Edinburgh, Scotland for six months. There she learned the art of unaccompanied singing and upon her return to the USA in 1998 began traveling all over New England performing at any open mike within 100 miles of her new home in Springfield, Massachusetts. Over a decade later, she is now a full-time performer who bridges the old and new with a refreshing stage presence. She has released four full-length recordings, all of which have earned praise on both sides of the Atlantic. She tours extensively in the United Kingdom and in North America and can also be seen on stage with her good friend, singer and musician John Roberts.New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, 38 Bethel Street, New Bedford.

Paradise Kitty Live in the Vault at Greasy Luck Brewpub (9:30pm-11:30pm)
Downtown New Bedford’s hottest newest destination. The brewpub and event venue is set within a former bank building featuring original vault doors and a truly historic feel.
