Matters of Truth and Justice: Swimming the Great Divide (11:00am)
Albert Einstein said, “In matters of truth and justice, there is no difference between large and small problems, for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same.” In one sense, we might consider that statement true; as UU’s we value the fair treatment of all people and take up causes, large and small, to do what we can toward justice as we see it. But if you follow the news, you will see that the issues are not all the same, and many people in our country are divided on what constitutes justice, especially when it comes to moral/religious issues like reproductive rights, same-sex marriage, and who is willing to make your wedding cake.

This summer’s Lyceum series will be exploring the theme of ‘Justice’ and this opening talk will focus on how our ideas about justice collude and collide. How do we know what is “right” and “wrong” when our sense of justice is an injustice to our neighbor? Is “Justice” even a real thing if we can’t agree on what it means? How do we get over our own righteous minds to be able to build bridges across such great divides? First Unitarian Church, 71 8th St. New Bedford.
