14 Things To Do This Weekend (Jan. 26-Jan. 28)

A surprisingly pleasant weekend is in store. Certainly, unusual in terms of winter in January weather. While mornings and evenings will be brisk with temperatures ranging between 35-40 degrees, the days will warm up to almost 50 in some cases. Generally speaking, the sun will be out for most of the weekend, with the exception being Sunday which will be characterized with “periods of rain.” At least it won’t be snow!

Patti Smith at the Zeiterion (8:00pm)
An eclectic and intimate evening of readings, personal stories, and songs related to the new book Devotion. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, iconic artist, and author Patti Smith reads from her latest book, Devotion, a deeply personal look at her creative process, inspirations, and unexpected connections. All attendees will receive a copy of the book on the night of the reading, which is included in the ticket price.

Patti Smith is a writer, performer, and visual artist. Her memoir Just Kids received a National Book Award, and her recent book M Train is a critically acclaimed New York Times best-seller. Smith was awarded the prestigious title of “Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Republic. Her seminal album Horses has been hailed as one of the top one hundred albums of all time. The performance does not include a public book signing. Books will not be autographed.

Seed Sovereignty Day (10:00am-4:00pm)
Those who control the seed system, control the food system, control the people. And yet, over the past 50 years, as we’ve lost the majority of our plant breeds and seed companies, we’ve also divorced plants from their place and from a culture of human-scale, regenerative and organic agriculture. There is now a growing movement to reclaim seeds and breeds, to re-localize seeds to particular bioregions, and to return to growers the power to participate in the process. Through partnerships between professional breeders and growers, we can develop better genetics and provide growers with new streams of income. This field day brings together growers, veteran breeders, and seed experts to discuss how we can reclaim our seed systems while also diversifying our enterprises. Ever wanted to experience grape stomping? Now’s your chance! Grape stomping will be at 1:30pm & 3:30pm each day (indoors in our tank room). How to participate: Arrive early to purchase a ticket for $1 (cash only, proceeds go to the Newport Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.) Tickets can be purchased at the host stand when you arrive. The Soap Myth w/ Ed Asner at the Zeiterion (7:00pm)
More than a half century after WWII, at the desperate urging of a passionate survivor (played by Ed Asner), a young investigative reporter finds herself caught between numerous versions of the same story. Against the backdrop of deadline reporting and journalistic integrity, the critically-acclaimed The Soap Myth by Jeff Cohen questions who has the right to write history – those people who have lived it and remember, those who study and protect it, or those who would seek to distort its very existence? And what is our responsibility once we know the truth?

The Soap Myth stars Emmy Award-winning Ed Asner (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Up) and features Tony & Drama Desk Award-Nominee Johanna Day, Blair Baker, and Ned Eisenberg in a staged reading. This production was produced Off Broadway at the Roundabout Theater in 2012 by the National Jewish Theater Foundation. A film of that production was broadcast nationally on PBS and is in the permanent collection of the Britain’s Digital Theatre. The performance will be followed by a moderated Q&A Session that includes playwright Jeff Cohen.

Ashley Jordan / Timmy Brown (Acoustic Sets) – Live in the Vault (9:00pm)
Come join us for a night of Country Music – Live in the Vault! Timmy Brown, who has become a favorite here in the Vault at Greasy Luck Brewpub will be performing acoustic. Kicking the night off, will be Ashley Jordan, also performing acoustic, for her first performance in the Vault. Free Guided Bird Walk (8:00am-10:00am)
Grab your binoculars and join our birding experts out on the trails. In the serene natural landscape at NBS, you will count up as many bird species as you can while also keeping an eye out for non-flying wildlife. All birding levels welcome. Advanced Winter Hiking (9:30am-12:00pm)
Are you looking for an active outdoor challenge? Hike Norman Bird Sanctuary’s snowy ridge trails and take in the panoramic scenery from the top. Turn your winter hibernation into a sense of accomplishment with this challenging naturalist-guided hike. Afterwards, return inside for hot chocolate and tea. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch. Dress warmly. Snowshoes are welcome but not necessary. Recommended for active adults – $12 Members, $15 Non-members. New Bedford LGBTQ Winter Film Series (2:00pm-5:00pm)
