Volunteer tutor/mentors needed at Harbour House, New Bedford

Can you spare a few hours a week to influence the future of a child impacted by homelessness? School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) is seeking one-on-one afterschool tutor/mentors to work with children in grades K-12 starting in September. Tutors are needed to work with students living at the HarbOur House shelter, 713 Shawmut Ave., New Bedford, and at shelters, schools and hotels and motels in Brockton, Norwell, Randolph, Stoughton, and Weymouth. Nearly 1,600 Massachusetts students have benefitted from SOWMA’s customized academic services since the organization’s founding by Cheryl Opper of Easton in 2004. Thirty-three SOWMA students are currently enrolled in college.

Each SOWMA tutor is matched with a student for one or two hours a week. Tutors work with students on homework and school projects. Tutoring sessions are designed to fill in the layers of learning that may be missing due to frequent moves and school absences. Every SOWMA tutor is expected to serve as a mentor and positive role model. Teens and adults aged 18 and older are needed. No prior experience is required.

Every SOWMA volunteer must attend a two-hour New Tutor Training session and two-and-a-half hour Resource Workshop before beginning to tutor. A New Tutor Training session will be held at HarbOur House on Saturday, September 6, from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. A Resource Workshop will follow from 1:00 – 3:30 pm at the same location. Review the full schedule of Tutor Trainings and Resource Workshops and register online at http://www.sowma.org/get-involved/tutor-mentor/new-tutor-training.
