  1. This city needs the money

    • A casino under the terms outlined is a win/win for New Bedford. It would clean up an environmental mess downtown, guarantee 12 million a year to the city, plus purchase of additional 10 million to local business. How can people be against this when New Bedford has such a high unemployment rate.2000 much needed jobs would be created. It would be a beautiful enhancement to the waterfront. If you do not like casinos do not go. It would be a big loss for the city. I have lived here and own a home here all my life. The revenue would help schools and keep our property taxes in line to attract people to live here. Wake up and lets turn the corner here. If we lose this opportunity it would be a shame.

  2. A casino is not a magic pill that will cure-all of the area’s economic woes. Casino revenues have decreased steadily over the last several years. Many casinos have closed altogether. Those that haven’t, have let workers go and are trying to re-finance the millions of dollars of debt they have to save money on interest. I wish people would stop acting as though this would somehow pave the roads of New Bedford with gold and make us all rich.

  3. Would have been a good idea many years ago, but not so much anymore. How about our politicians start trying to bring business’s like the Amazon warehouse to NB, instead of Fall River and Freetown.

  4. My great grandparents came to New Bedford and they enjoyed a beautiful, safe thriving city. It has changed through every subsequent generation. It’s time for good choices again. Voters, do your homework. Casinos NEVER bring in the money that is promised. The increase in crime, drugs, parasitic business, addictions, and such things requires government to outspend any revenue gained. Jobs are mainly low-paying so big money ends up in few pockets.

  5. a casino will only cause more drugs crimes and problems let’s fix the problems we have before inviting more

  6. I vote NO casino on the NStar/ Cannon Street property.. Save that waterfront property for commercial and recreational marine use and a public park. Don’t force the downtown historic, artistic , commercial, educational & entertainment district (including the Z) to compete with a casino complex, the majority of whose patrons will never venture off the casino property.
Don’t we have enough traffic problems in the routes 6 & 18 traffic corridor now? It’s like a blocked funnel, especially when the Bridge is open for boat traffic, which the city is working diligently to increase. Has the city planned for the traffic congestion that will result from the new South Terminal which will be impacted by increased car and truck traffic? And what about the whole population of citizens living in the south, south central and central areas of the city who, while trying to travel to and from their homes or businesses will see traffic backed up to Fort Taber, Buttonwood Park and Alden Road for crying out loud. People will have to depend increasingly on the Coggeshall St. Bridge to travel East/West causing backups from Acushnet Avenue to Main St, Fairhaven and beyond. What do you think will happen to property values when people can’t navigate into or out of their neighborhoods? Or r doesn’t that matter?
The New Bedford waterfront seems like the worst possible place to put a casino. Doesn’t New Bedford have any vacant space at the industrial park suitable for a casino? Or is a casino prohibited by ordinances? It seems that dedicated on/off highway access to the industrial park would have a lesser impact on residential neighborhoods, than what is now being considered for Cannon St.. Having heard discussion about casino goers patronizing local businesses, thus enriching their coffers, I think any visitors to the casino could find their way or be bussed/shuttled to Downtown and other attractions if they have that on their agenda. But that shouldn’t be a driving force for locating the casino on the waterfront.
Will the casino be paying upfront for any improvements the city has to make to the property? What’s the city’s backup plan if the NStar/Cannon St. property becomes a casino and doesn’t meet its backers expectations? Does the property become an eyesore then revert to the city to then convert it into Will the casino pay upfront for any improvements the city has to make to the property? What’s the city’s backup plan if the NStar / Cannon St. property becomes a casino and doesn’t meet its backers expectations? Does the property become an eyesore, revert to the city to then be converted into a more useful and site appropriate commercial/recreational marina and public park?

  7. Sure, a waterfront casino surrounded by Housing Projects. I don’t think that’s any type of draw except for more criminals in the downtown area of New Bedford.

  8. Here we go again now New Bedford Ma.Again says it made a deal to a Casino will see seen as things have a habit of falling through don’t be surprised if it does Anyways once again if it passes and they build it the city isn’t going to be saved but these dumb politicians think this will save NB trust me it won’t as far as Mayor Mitchell goes if he runs again he lost my vote he has no idea what he’s doing and I’m not just talking about a casino I could care if they build one here or not I don’t gamble I don’t work in New Bedford and I’ll be out of here as soon as the rents sky rocket and the crime continues to get worse due to crime casinos cause and attack but that’s New Bedford for you good luck on another city fantasy that could fail

  9. Casino will kill all business down town lower value of properties around the site put people downtown out of jobs.Have you every been to a casino you do not patronize local shops. another question why was the election census sent out before referendum and not after ,was this a way to limit voters? when politicians say this is good for you ,think back has it ever been good for you? there is so much left out you do not know. Why did we put all the tax money into fixing up downtown just be altered for the casino. This casino is nothing but bad for New Bedfordvote no!!!!
