North Carolina man robbed in New Bedford

new-bedford-robberynew-bedford-robbery2Last night at approximately 9pm officers were dispatched to the area of Coffin Ave. and Acushnet Ave. regarding an armed robbery. The victim, a 34 year old North Carolina man, was walking down the street when he was confronted by the suspect. The suspect opened a pouch and showed the victim what appeared to be a firearm and demanded his money.

The suspect ended up taking the victim’s money, wallet, credit cards, and cell phone. With the assistance of the gang unit, officers were able to track down the suspect to a 3rd floor apartment in the 200 block of Phillips Ave. The suspect was found hiding in the shower stripped down to his underwear and socks while holding a crack pipe. He was taken into custody without incident. Video of the arrest can be viewed here.

The victim’s property was recovered and the alleged firearm was found on the porch. It turned out to be a starter pistol.

Scheduled to be arraigned this morning in New Bedford District court on Armed Robbery charges; Kelvin Ortiz age 20 of Phillips Road in New Bedford.
