November is jam packed with world-class music!

The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra has a busy month ahead with performances by its Symphony Orchestra, South Coast Chamber Music Players, and Youth Orchestras, as well as presentations of its Learning in Concert educational program in schools throughout South Coast.

On November 15 and 16, the NBSO’s South Coast Chamber Music Series presents BAROQUE BEAUTY, featuring works by Handel, Scarlatti, Telemann, Bach and Stamitz, with musicians Donna Marie Cobert and Laura Shamu on oboe, Leo Iguchi on cello, and Mark Kroll on harpsichord.

Saturday’s 5pm concert will be at St. Gabriel Church in Marion, while Sunday’s 4pm concert will be at Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford. Admission is $20 at the door.

On Sunday, November 23, the NBSO’s Youth Orchestras will present their fall concert at 3pm at the Kuss Middle School, 52 Globe Mills Ave, Fall River. Admission at the door is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.

More than 120 young musicians, ranging from kindergarten to college, will perform such great works as Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute, Beethoven’s famous Minuet, and selections from Bizet’s Carmen. The four Youth Orchestra groups have been working hard each Saturday morning to bring this season opening concert to life.

Then on Sunday, November 30, at 3pm, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra continues its South Coast tradition of performing Handel’s grand oratorio Messiah over Thanksgiving weekend when it presents A THANKSGIVING MUSICAL FEAST at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. In addition to Messiah’s Part I, Hallelujah, and Amen, the concert will also include Bach’s energetic and triumphant Gloria in excelsis Deo. Messiah is one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in the world, and the NBSO will fill The Z with the glorious sounds of Messiah on November 30. Featured soloists Sonja Tengblad, Deborah Rentz-Moore, Matthew Anderson, and Andrew Garland, will be joined by Mastersingers by the Sea and the SouthCoast Community Chorus, plus singers from the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus, the New Bedford Choral Society, Sine Nomine Choral Ensemble, the Sippican Choral Society, and the Spirit of Saint Anthony Choir.

Tickets start at $25 with students always $10; available through The Z box office at 508-994-2900 or online at www.zeiterion.org. Subscription savings are also available by purchasing tickets to three or more Symphony concerts; call the NBSO at 508-999-6276.

The NBSO’s educational programming for the school year is in full swing with students participating in our Learning in Concert program, which explores the concept of contrast through classical music, photography, poetry, literature and grammar.

You deserve a symphony in your life—the New Bedford Symphony! The NBSO is a professional orchestra that annually presents a 7-concert series of classical and pops music with prize-winning guests artists from around the world, as well as a 4-concert chamber music series. In addition, the NBSO’s innovative and highly regarded music education programs reach 30,000 students each year. The NBSO is dedicated to building a community of music in the South Coast.
