On Monday, the New Bedford Police Department will add seven new police officers to its ranks. Seven new officers, who recently graduated from the Police Academy, will be sworn-in at a ceremony on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 9:00 A.M. at New Bedford City Hall.

The new officers will raise the department’s complement of officers to 263 members. With these new officers, a total of fourteen officers will have taken the oath to serve and protect New Bedford residents this year.

Mayor Jon Mitchell said, “The most fundamental role of government is to protect people, and as mayor, I take that responsibility very seriously. That’s why I have made it a priority to give our police department what it needs to get the job done. It is critical that we recruit the very best officers we can get, and that is certainly true for the group of new officers joining the force.”

“It is important to acknowledge the tough, serious, and important work that our police officers do on daily basis to ensure that we live in an orderly, free society. In my prior career as a federal prosecutor, I worked with police departments across Massachusetts and America and frankly, the New Bedford Police Department stood out in its dedication to excellence, its competence and high level of professionalism. I look forward to joining Chief David Provencher in welcoming our newest officers to the department,” he continued.
