Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2015 planning committee announces essay contest

REQUIREMENTS: Write a 500 word essay on one of the first two selections below. Essays may be dropped off at The Department of Community Services or at your school’s administration office no later than January 12th at 4:00 PM. Essays will not be returned.

Students may select one of the following questions.

1. Today, we have access to thousands of people in an instant ,through social media engines like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. These websites allow for quick communication of ideas, opinions, and events. In the sixties, Dr. King, and other civil rights leaders were able to organize thousands to march and rally for causes they believed in. What techniques were used? Compare those techniques with the tools of today. Which is better?

2. How are the protests of today on issues of race and civil rights different than protests of the sixties? Explain the similarities and differences, give examples. Part B- Define civil disobedience. Is it a good or bad choice? Why?

Three winners will be selected. The first place award will be $125, 2nd place $100 and 3rd place $75. Winners may be requested to read their winning essays during the Martin Luther King Day program in January.

New this year, some of the MLK essay participants are invited to read their essays at the downtown public library during Black History Month in February. This will be a one hour program. Your school will be informed of the details at a later date.
