Councilor Brian K. Gomes on New Bedford as a potential host for the 2024 Olympics

The possibility of the 2024 Summer Olympics coming to the City of Boston is truly an exciting prospect, not only for our capital city, but for the entire Commenwealth and Northeast Region. I would like to personally commend Mayor John Mitchell and his entire administration for their efforts to ensure that the great city of New Bedford has an opportunity to be a part of such a special event, should Boston be chosen as the host city.

Should one or more events be held in New Bedford, the entire world be able to see and experience the rich history, culture and beauty that our city offers. The economic benefits would be like none the city has ever seen and with proper planning and negotiations, the 2024 Summer Olympics would be and incredible stimulus to our city’s tourism industry.

I look forward to working with the administration and my fellow councilors to see that this comes to fruition. May this opportunity benefit the city of New Bedford, both now, and in the future.
