The crash occured in the Thomas P. O’Neil, Jr. Tunnel.

This morning at about 12:05 a.m., State Police from the Tunnels barracks responded to a report of a crash involving a motorcycle on Route 93 North in the Thomas P. O’Neil, Jr. Tunnel near exit 23 in Boston, which resulted in the death of the operator.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Eric Papkee indicates that Kieran Boyle, 23, of Norwood was traveling northbound in the tunnel on a 2013 Yamaha R6 when he lost control of the motorcycle, causing him to crash and ultimately strike the concrete barrier adjacent to the roadway. Boyle sustained fatal injuries as a result of that impact, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, speed is believed to be a factor.

Trooper Papkee is being assisted in this investigation by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and a trooper assigned to District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office. Also assisting on scene were members of Boston Fire and EMS and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
