Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash on Rt.18 in New Bedford

This morning at approximately 7:00 a.m., troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Dartmouth Barracks responded to reports of a single car crash on Rt.18 North near Elm St. in New Bedford. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 1998 Jeep Cherokee swerved to avoid snow in the roadway, struck the guardrail and subsequently rolled over, ejecting the passenger. The passenger, Theresa Suprenant, 22 of New Bedford succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The operator, a 19 year old female also from New Bedford, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by New Bedford Fire & EMS with minor injuries.

No charges have been filed at this time. The facts and circumstances remain under investigation with the assistance of troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit attached to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. The roadway was completely reopened at approximately 11:45 a.m.
