Henry H. Rogers Walking Tours
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00 a.m., June through September
Start outside Town Hall, 40 Center St., Fairhaven

A free 90-minute guided walk teaches about the town’s benefactor Henry H. Rogers of the Standard Oil Co. and his gifts of magnificent architecture to Fairhaven. Tour includes visits inside the Town Hall and Millicent Library. Tuesday guide: Bob Foster, Thursday guide: Chris Richard. Weather permitting.

Pirates & Privateers Presentation at Fort Phoenix
Fridays, 10:00 a.m., June through September
Start at Fort Phoenix flagpole, Fort Phoenix, Old Fort Rd., Fairhaven

Is there really pirate treasure buried on Sconticut Neck? Why might you become a privateer instead of joining the Navy? What’s the deal with the parrot on the shoulder? Hear tales of pirates, Revolutionary War era privateers, and historical Fort Phoenix presented by Greybeard, an 18th century gunner from the privateer sloop Broome, and Abigail “Abby” Black, a ship’s doctor who grows herbal remedies in her village garden when not at sea. They are sometimes visited by other members of the “Companie.” Learn which things you think you know about pirates are myths based on fiction, the difference between pirates and “legal” privateers, and why grog wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Presentation includes a demonstration firing of a black powder swivel gun. Weather permitting.


“Twenty-Acre Purchase” Walking Tours
Wednesdays, starting June 8, 10:00 a.m., June through September
Starts at west end of Phoenix Bike Trail,
Main and South streets, Fairhaven

This 90-minute walk teaches the history of the early waterfront village area that eventually grew into the center of Fairhaven. See houses and buildings dating from pre-Revolutionary times into the 1800s and learn about the people who lived and worked. Guide: Howe Allen. Weather permitting.

Whitfield-Manjiro Friendship House
Saturdays and Sundays, Noon to 4:00 p.m.
11 Cherry Street, Fairhaven

Visit the house of Capt. William Whitfield, who rescued Japanese fisherman Manjiro Nakahama from a Pacific island in 1841 and brought him to Fairhaven. Manjiro became the first Japanese person to live in America and later grew in prominence in Japan following the opening of Japan to western trade. Old Stone Schoolhouse
Saturdays, 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Fairhaven Farmer’s Market
Sunday afternoons beginning June 19, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Fairhaven High School, 12 Huttleston Avenue, Fairhaven

Buy fresh local produce and other products from area farmers. Enjoy the local market with family and friends every Sunday afternoon through mid-October. Entertainment will be available occasionally during market hours. Access the parking lot off Main Street to the rear of the Academy Building. Handicap parking. Free admission. Coordinated by the Fairhaven Sustainability Committee.

Take a kid fishing! Tournament promotes the sport to new fishermen of all ages. Prizes awarded for three biggest fish of each species—tautog, sea bass, scup. Blessing of the Oldies & Car Show

Antique and Classic cars are displayed at Cushman Park and blessed for the 2016 season. There is a $10 donation to enter a car. Dash plaques to first 200 entries. Trophies awarded. DJ Johnny Angel will play tunes from the band stand. Free admission to the public. Sponsored by Angels of ’76, with proceeds to purchase bricks in memory of classmates at the FHS Memorial Brick Park. 42nd Father’s Day 10K and 5K Road Races

The annual running of  a 10K, TAC sanctioned course through the lovely, historical Fairhaven streets features some of New England’s top runners. There is also a shorter 5K race. Riverside Cemetery Evening Tour
Wednesday, June 22, 2016, 6:00 p.m.
Riverside Cemetery, 274 Main St., Fairhaven

Take an evening walk in one of the most beautiful rural-style cemeteries in Massachusetts, created in 1850 by Warren Delano II, the grandfather of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The tour visits the final resting places of some of the town’s most prominent people. You’ll also see lovely examples of early tombstone art as you walk along the beautifully landscaped paths. 23 rd Annual Buzzards Bay Swim
Saturday June 25, 2016, 7:00 to 11:00 a.m.
From East Beach, New Bedford, to Fort Phoenix, Fairhaven

Celebrate clean water at the Buzzards Bay Coalition's 23rd annual Buzzards Bay Swim! Join more than 300 individuals, families and teams, ages 12-83, on this 1.2 mile swim across the calm, clean water from New Bedford to Fairhaven where enthusiastic fans and a breakfast celebration await you at Fort Phoenix Beach. This fully-supported event includes multiple starts for more accomplished swimmers and swimmers who prefer to have a safety kayak escort. There is a $25 registration fee, plus each swimmer is required to raise $150 minimum to support the education, conservation, research and advocacy programs of the Buzzards Bay Coalition. Homecoming Day Fair

Fairhaven’s largest annual event features about 175 booths of handmade crafts and delicious foods in addition to live entertainment, an art exhibit on the west lawn of the Unitarian Church, and children’s activities, including the very popular fire engine rides.
