Meet the authors of Spinner Publications’ newest book, A Picture History of New Bedford, Volume Two (1925-1980) at one of two gala book-signing events to be held at Gallery X, 169 William Street, New Bedford.

On Thursday, December 17, 5–9pm, a premiere book launch will introduce the latest Spinner book to the public. Guests can meet the authors, enjoy refreshments, watch a film, view an exhibit and be among the first readers of the long-awaited A Picture History of New Bedford, Volume Two. For those unable to attend Thursday’s launch, an encore event will take place Sunday, December 20, 1–5pm.

The second in a three-volume set, A Picture History of New Bedford, Volume Two is part of the most extensive history of the city to be published in more than 100 years. The hardcover book is a numbered, limited edition signed by the five authors—Joseph Thomas, Alfred Saulniers, Natalie White, Marsha McCabe and Jay Avila. At the event, authors will personalize books and chat with guests. Meanwhile, attendees will be able to view the documentary film A Rising Tide—a highly personal movie centered on the city, produced and directed in 1953 by New Bedford-born filmmaker Theodore A. Morde. On exhibit during Spinner’s opening events will be Gallery X’s “Xmas Show,” an annual open-community art show featuring the work of area artisans and artists.

With engaging narratives and thrilling imagery, A Picture History of New Bedford, Volume Two chronicles small happenings as well as watershed events such as the Great Depression, Prohibition, the textile strike of 1928, hurricanes and urban renewal. Hundreds of photographs, profiles and stories bring the city to life in an enthralling journey through the core of the 20th century. Ride the last trolley, sip an ice cream float at a bygone soda fountain, take a turn on the ballroom dance floor and see the city’s waterfront become home to one of the world’s major fishing ports. Celebrate New Bedford’s music from big band sounds to folk, fado, jazz and rock & roll. Explore the evolution of the city’s diverse mix of cultures. Experience the people, places and events that have shaped New Bedford, one of New England’s most historically significant cities.

A Picture History of New Bedford, Volume Two is generously supported by individual donors as well as by Bristol County Savings Bank, CHT Foundation, Furthermore Foundation, Mary Morley Crapo Hyde Eccles Fund, and the New Bedford Arts Council. Books are priced at $40.00 softcover and $75.00 hardcover (tax included).
