Comedian Wanda Sykes Launches the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center’s 2014-15 Season

wanda-sykesWanda Sykes has been called “one of the funniest stand-up comics” by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Funniest People in America, and she’s opening The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center ‘s 2014-15 Season at on Saturday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m. For information or to purchase tickets call 508-994-2900 or visit www.zeiterion.org. Wanda Sykes’ smart-witted stand up has sent her career in many different areas. Her two HBO® comedy specials in 2006 and 2009 were nominated for three Primetime Emmy® Awards. Wanda has also appeared in several TV shows including “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “The Wanda Sykes Show.” In January, 2014, she returned to the OWN Network with her stand up special “Herlarious,” which highlights female comics. Wanda has appeared in several feature films including “Evan Almighty,” “Monster-In-Law,” and “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” She has also voiced characters in several animated features including “Ice Age: Continental Drift” and “Rio.” In 2010 she won a GLAAD award for promoting a positive image of equal rights for gays and lesbians.

The stars continue to align at The Zeiterion all season with fellow funny folks like the six female comedians in Jenny McCarthy’s Dirty, Sexy, Funny Tour (December 5), the outrageous Kathy Griffin (March 11), and fast witted Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood of “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?” (March 27).

Three national Broadway tours are coming to in New Bedford!  The Tony Award nominated musical “Jekyll & Hyde” (October 9), the blessedly funny “Sister Act: The Musical” (January 18) and the grown-ups prequel to Peter Pan, “Peter and the Starcatcher” (March 20).

Music fills the season with ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro (October 16), “20 Feet From Stardom” soul sensation Darlene Love (November 29), New Zealand’s popular Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra (January 11), Dave Mason’s Traffic Jam (January 17), Portuguese fado powerhouses Camane and Carminho (March 7) Doo Wop 11 (March 28) and the Bach meets Beyonce classical violin duo, Black Violin (May 29), and more.

The iconic Martha Graham Dance Company, one of the oldest and most celebrated dance companies on the planet, performs “Essential Graham” (November 15) and the fiery Flamenco Vivo! Presents  a fierce night of Spanish dance and music (February 8).

Families and children can choose between classics like A Christmas Carol (December 13) and the spectacular Chinese acrobats in Cirque Ziva (March 8) and a variety of family theater like Pinkalicious (April 26) and Curious George (June 14).
