Brothers beat, urinate on Dorchester homeless man

State troopers early this morning arrested two brothers who urinated on and then beat a homeless man who was sleeping next to the JFK T station on Columbia Road. Evidence suggests that after urinating on the 58-year-old victim, who was asleep in a sleeping bag, they punched him multiple times and struck him with a metal pole. According to one witness statement, the victim may have slept with the pole nearby for protection.

The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center with a broken nose and bruises to his head and torso. The men encountered the victim around midnight while heading home from the Red Sox game.

Arrested were Scott J. Leader, 38, of South Boston, and Steve M. Leader, 30, of South Boston. After their arrest, both became highly aggressive and combative while being booked at the South Boston Barracks – exposing themselves and urinating in the cell, challenging troopers to come into the cells to fight, banging on the cell door, and making threatening and anti-immigration statements. Scott Leader made a statement referring to the victim as an “illegal immigrant” and stated the reason he and his brother were arrested is that they were white and the victim was a minority (the victim, who is not being identified, is Hispanic). At one point Steve Leader punched and kicked the plexiglass on the cell door for 30 minutes continuously.

Scott Leader and Steve Leader are expected to be arraigned today in Dorchester District Court on the following charges:
1. Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (a pole);
2. Assault and Battery with Dangerous Weapon (bodily fluid);
3. Assault and Battery;
4. Assault and Battery to Intimidate, with Bodily Injury;
5. Open and Gross Lewdness;
6. Indecent Expsosure;
7. Disorderly Conduct;
8. Disturbing the Peace; and
9. Threatening to Commit a Crime.

Steve Leader is additionally charged with malicious destruction of property over $250.

The arrests were made by Trooper Paul Rego and Trooper Scott Flaherty of the South Boston Barracks. They were assisted by the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, which collected and documented evidence
