18 Things to do this Weekend (May 22 – May 24)

A stellar weekend is ahead in terms of weather. The only oddity is the overnight low of 39 degrees on Friday. Saturday will be perfectly cool at 66 degrees and Sunday will be borderline hot with a temperature of 76 degrees. There will be a bit of breeze all weekend long, but no rain. That means we can head out and tackle all these great events all over the South Coast!

Friday, May 22nd

FREE Youth Football Camp w/ New England Patriots (3:00pm,7:00pm)
The New England Patriots Alumni Club (NEPAC), and the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation will host its annual ‘Football For YOU’ youth football clinic at New Bedford High School 230 Hathaway BLVD. The clinic is offered free of charge to children between the ages of 9 and 14. New England Patriots Alumni will serve as instructors during the skills sessions, along with the local high school coaching staff. Read more here.

Red, White and Brew (5:30pm-8:00pm)
Start your Memorial Day weekend with good company while supporting a local treasure. Enjoy samples from local breweries, meet & greets with animal residents and savor delicious Memorial Day menu items while listening to local favorites, Rebecca Correia and Craig DeMelo. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the continued growth of the Buttonwood Park Zoo’s educational programs, ensuring that Southcoast families will always have a way to experience nature close to home.

Welcome to Painting with a Splash where you are the artist! Painting with a Splash is the newest addition to Historic Whaling City Downtown New Bedford. Bringing you an experience of art as entertainment. Add a little wine (BYOB) that will surely tap into your creative side. With step by step instruction and a little music, you and your friends will create the evening’s featured painting with a splash of your own uniqueness. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Just a desire to have fun.


Saturday, May 23rd

Spring Revolutionary War Encampment (Fairhaven) (9:00am-Sunset)
Members of the Fairhaven Village Militia and the Fairhaven Office of Tourism will live in an authentic period camp the same way it was done more than 230 years ago. Men, women and children dressed in period clothing will reenact life in 1778 and talk about the history of the fort. They will also be demonstrating campfire cooking, fire starting with flint and steel, musket ball casting, military drilling, loading and firing flintlock muskets and rifles, 18th-century dentistry and medicine, cannon firing and more. Westport River Gardeners Annual Garden Sale (9:00am-1:00pm)
Join Westport River Gardeners at their annual fundraising Garden Fair. Funds raised go towards community beautification and gardening projects in the Westport, Massachusetts area. Plants, perennials, annuals, herbs, and compost for sale, including the Garden Shed where you can find other interesting and useful garden items. There will also be raffle items, and vendors. Car Wash Fundraiser for GLCPS (10:00am-3:00pm)
The Global Learning Charter Public School’s class of 2016 will be holding a car wash fundraiser at the Walgreen’s at 1103 Kempton Street. Only $5.

Claire has a rare form of psychogenic amnesia that erases her memory whenever she goes to sleep. This morning, like all mornings, she wakes up a blank slate. Her chipper husband comes in with a cup of coffee, explains her condition, hands her a book filled with all sorts of essential information, and he disappears into the shower. A limping, lisping, half-blind, half-deaf man in a ski mask, pops out from under her bed and claims to be her brother, there to save her. Claire’s info book is quickly discarded, and she’s hustled off to the country-house of her mother, a recent stroke victim whose speech has been reduced to utter gibberish.

There’s a box social coming up, and Curly (Christopher McIntyre) asks Laurey (Meighread Dandeneau) if she’ll be his date. Trouble is, Laurey thinks he’s waited too long, and in a fit of pique accepts an offer from the boorish Jud (Daniel Mello) instead. Meanwhile, Laurey’s friend Ado Annie (Marissa Vasques) is also torn between two men: a cowboy named Will (Ryan Bourdreau) and a foreign peddler, Ali Hakim (Joshua Boucher). Both women struggle to know their own hearts before it’s too late.
