16 Things to do this Weekend (May 29 – May 31)

While we’ll be “all over the place” in terms of weather this weekend – we’ll range from 40 degrees to 78 degrees, rain, wind, sunshine – there is nothing happening this weekend that will slow down any of us that are determined to get out and have some fun. We’ve been cooped up this Winter with record snows and hungry for activities!

Friday, May 29th

Pastel Painting Class (Fairhaven) (2:00pm-4:00pm)
Art on Center is a community for all things visually artistic. We’re up to our elbows in all different mediums of art, from simple sketching to advanced oil painting, photography, digital media and everything in between. Art on Center has been established with the goal of empowering creative minds for a brighter future. By providing a stimulating environment where differences are celebrated and self esteem is enhanced. Frogs at the Bogs (Mattapoisett) (7:00pm-8:00pm)
A free outdoor exploration program at The Bogs at the Mattapoisett River Reserve (approximately 137 Acushnet Rd.) During this guided evening walk hosted by the Buzzards Bay Coalition, you’ll learn some fun facts about frogs and maybe even see a few frogs yourself! The program will include frog and marsh discovery activities that families of all ages will enjoy.

Painting with a Splash: Blue Egg Nest, Colorful Palm, Horseneck Beach (7:00pm)
Welcome to Painting with a Splash where you are the artist! Painting with a Splash is the newest addition to Historic Whaling City Downtown New Bedford. Bringing you an experience of art as entertainment. Add a little wine (BYOB) that will surely tap into your creative side. With step by step instruction and a little music, you and your friends will create the evening’s featured painting with a splash of your own uniqueness. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Just a desire to have fun.

Candlelight Memorial for Brooklyn Roderigues and Meghan Sargent (7:00pm)
Brooklyn Roderigues and his girlfriend Meghan Sargent who were tragically killed while driving home Monday evening.

Black Violin at the “Z” (8:00pm)
A Top Five Band at SXSW, Kev Marcus and Wil B are classically trained musicians who fuse hip hop, R&B, soul, rock and classical into one groundbreaking combination of sound that is sure to raise the roof! They have performed on Broadway and shared concert stages with some of the biggest names in music. Joining the duo is DJ TK, Beatdown on Drums and Joe Cello on Cello. Black Violin will enthrall lovers of Bach and Beyoncי. They have inspired folks from all over North America to get fired up about classical music.


Saturday, May 30th

Dollar-a-Bag book Sale (Fairhaven) (9:00am-1:00pm)
We welcome you to come and fill a bag of good reads for only a dollar! The Oxford Book Haven & Cafe is located downstairs in the Church of the Good Shepherd, 357 Main St., Fairhaven. FREE Learn to Quahog (Fairhaven) (10:00am-12:00pm)
Join the Coalition at Round Cove on West Island to learn how to harvest your own quahogs. We’ll teach you the basics of local quahogging – what you need, how to do it, and where to go. Learn how to Quahog for FREE on Saturday!

The Lost Ladybug Project with Loree Griffin Burns (1:00pm)
Loree Burns will present a citizen science program based on the Lost Ladybug Project. The program will begin at the Plumb Memorial Library in Rochester and move to a nearby field on Dexter Lane. Ms. Burns will teach children and their families to collect ladybugs, photograph them, and then upload their data to the Lost Ladybug Project website (http://lostladybug.org/) where their data will be used by scientists keeping track of North American ladybug species. UMass MFA Thesis Exhibition (3:00pm)
The 2015 MFA thesis exhibition culminates the two to three years of intensive research and preparation of UMass Dartmouth MFA degree candidates in the visual art. Making It Happen – 2nd Annual Spring Fundraiser for South Coast LGBTQ Network (4:00pm-7:00pm)
This year’s fundraiser will highlight the progress made so far and introduce the new Program Coordinator. There will be appetizers, a cash bar, DJ music, desserts and more. 9th Annual Opening of the Bay (6:00pm-11:00pm)
Kick-off the summer season by joining us for the 9th annual Opening of the Bay Celebration! Dinner, dancing, cash bar, silent auction. Last summer over 80% of the children attending our program were from low-income families. They simply do not have the ability to pay. The Opening of the Bay fundraiser allows these students to participate free of charge. Join us for a night of dining and dancing while helping to a make a difference in our community! Sunday, May 31st

Pancake Breakfast (Dartmouth) (9:00am-1:00pm)
Full breakfast includes coffee, juice, milk, pancakes and bacon. Tickets $7 adults, $6 seniors and $5 children under 12. Available at the door. Dartmouth Council On Aging, 628 Dartmouth St. Dartmouth.

Home Sweet Home and Plant Sale at Haskell Gardens (10:00am-4:00pm)
Home is where the heart is, and a well-designed garden – and extension of your home – is your escape to the outdoors. During this Open House event, explore intricate gardens surrounding one of New Bedford’s oldest homes that feature exotic plants and trees and discover why celebrities like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Martha Stewart, and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands sought gardening advice from maverick horticulturalist Allen C. Haskell. The event will showcase the lovely Haskell “hosta garden,” and include guided tours, food vendors, and our first annual Plant Sale featuring a variety of seasonal plant material suitable for growing in the New England climate.

Concerts at the Point: The Claremont Trio (Westport) (3:00pm)
Concerts at the Point seeks to bring world-renowned chamber artists to the communities of southeastern New England. The non-profit, all-volunteer organization hosts a series of concerts each season at the United Methodist Church at Westport Point, Massachusetts, a small, intimate venue with superb acoustics. “The Claremont Trio” will close out the season with a performance. Tickets $25 per person, $10 students.

New Anti-Semitism: The Price for Talking About it and the Price for Failing to Do So (7:30pm-9:00pm)
Phyllis Chesler is an Emerita Professor of Psychology at City University of New York. She is a best-selling author, a legendary feminist leader, a retired psychotherapist and expert courtroom witness. She has lectured and organized political, legal, religious, and human rights campaigns in the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel, and the Far East. Her work has been translated into many European languages and into Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Hebrew.

Dr. Chesler is a co-founder of the Association for Women in Psychology, The National Women’s Health Network, and The International Committee for Women of the Wall. She is a ShillmanGinsburg Fellow at The Middle East Forum, and a fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Anti-Semitism and Policy (ISGAP).
